SATURDAY PREPS: PCA softball wins two in Pelham Tourney; St. James baseball defeats Lee-Scott

SOFTBALL

Prattville Christian 3, Corner 1

PELHAM -- Sara Payton Schmidt hit a walkoff double to give the Panthers a 3-1 win over Corner in the Pelham Tournament and give head coach Randy Stough his 800th career coaching victory.

Schmidt’s three-run double erased a 1-0 lead by Corner. Addie Byrd was 2 for 3 for the Panthers as well.

Alivia Messick picked up the win, striking out seven batters.

 

Prattville 5, Prattville Christian 1

PELHAM --  The Panthers dropped their first game of the season in an error-filled outing in the Pelham Tournament, losing to Prattville 5-1 on Saturday.

Prattville Christian finished with four hits while Prattville had five.

Laura Beth NeSmith took the loss in the circle for the Panthers.  

 

Prattville Christian 10, Pelham 4

PELHAM -- Alivia Messick pitched a four-hitter and struck out five in a 10-4 defeat of Pelham in the Pelham Tournament on Saturday.

Holley Beth Rollan was 2 for 2 to lead the PCA offense, while Saniyah Weaver was 2 for 3. Sarah Payton Schmidt had a two-run home run for the Panthers as well.

PCA (7-1) will travel to Millbrook to play Stanhope Elmore on Tuesday.

 

Pike Road 6, Opelika 2

Addison Belyeu singled and scored and later doubled in a pair of runs to help the Patriots to a 6-2 win over Opelika in the Trojan Invitational at Lagoon Park on Saturday.

Pike Road advanced to the semifinals where the Patriots were eliminated by Chilton County.

Belyeu scored on an Ava Milton triple and later drove in a pair of runs. Kasyn Wilson and Belyeu each had a pair of hits. Milton, Kennedy Cuthbert and Kennedy Thompson had the remaining hits, including a double by Thompson.

Paisley Forshey got the win in the circle and Abby Olesen picked up a save by pitching the last two innings of the five-inning game.

Jade Jones, Jancyn Thompson, Katelyn Foley, Kas Smith and McCall Clayton each had a hit for Opelika.

 

BASEBALL

St. James 4, Lee-Scott Academy 1

A bases-clearing double by Mason Craig highlighted a four-run inning as the Trojans defeated Lee-Scott Academy 4-1 on Saturday in the first-ever meeting between the two programs to remain unbeaten.

The teams were scoreless until the bottom of the fifth inning.  After an out, Jimmy Dickens was hit with a pitch and promptly stole second and third. Conner Johnston walked and Luke Catchings executed a perfect squeeze play, laying down a bunt for a base hit down the first-base line to give the Trojans a 1-0 lead. After a fly out, Taber Offord loaded the bases with an infield single, and Craig just missed a grand slam with a fly ball to the left field wall which drove in all three runners for a 4-0 lead.

Starting pitcher Charlie Cutler pitched five innings of two-hit ball to claim the win. Offord came in to relieve, giving up a run in the sixth before striking out the side in the seventh to earn the save and preserve the win.

The Lee-Scott junior varsity defeated the Trojans 5-1 in a game after the varsity matchup.

St. James (4-0) will return to action on Monday in the 32nd annual Jason Armstrong Memorial FCA Baseball Tournament at Paterson Field against Andalusia on Monday at 5 p.m.

 

Montgomery Academy 10, JAG 0

Vincent Desautels and Finley Haigler threw a combined no hitter in Saturday’s matchup with the Jaguars which was limited to five innin

gs by the 10-run mercy rule.

Desautels threw 2.2 innings and struck out six, while Haigler threw 2.1 innings and struck out seven.

Montgomery Academy had just four hits in the win. Paxton Haigler had a single, scored on an error and drove in two runs. Vincent Desautels had a hit and drove in three runs, Finley Haigler had a hit and Andrew Hosein had a hit and drove in a pair of runs.

 

Montgomery Academy 7, Wetumpka 6 (8)

Vincent Desautels delivered a walk-off single to score William Marks in the bottom of the eighth inning to give the Eagles a 7-6 win over Class 6A Wetumpka on Saturday.

Andrew Hosein started for the Eagles and pitched 2.1 innings, allowing four earned runs with a strikeout. Marks came on in relief and pitched four innings, allowing four hits and two earned runs while striking out six. Chapman Baker relieved Marks and picked up the win, holding the Indians to two hits over the final 1.2 innings.

Montgomery Academy fell behind 3-0 in the top of the first, but scored a run on a wild pitch in the bottom half of the inning and countered a Wetumpka run in the second inning with two runs in the bottom half of the inning to make it 4-3.

Marks came on in relief of Hosein in the top of the third to get the Eagles out of a jam and Finley Haigler had an RBI double in the bottom of the third to tie the game before Marks singled in Haigler for a 5-4 lead.

Both teams added a run before Wetumpka scored again in the top of the seventh to send the game into extra innings.

Kingston Nelson led Montgomery Academy at the plate with a 3 for 3 performance, while Desautels was 2 for 4 with an RBI. Marks was 2 for 3 with a single, double and RBI. Finley Haigler was 1 for 3 with an RBI double and John Allen Jones was 1 for 3 with an RBI. Paxton Haigler was 1 for 4 with an RBI, Nathan Applegate was 1 for 3 and Hosein was 1 for 4.

Montgomery Academy (2-1) opens play in the 32nd annual Jason Armstrong Memorial FCA Baseball Classic on Monday at Riverwalk Stadium against Brewbaker Tech at 2 p.m.

 

GIRLS SOCCER

Catholic 10, BTW Magnet 0

Eryn Owens and Kate Johnson each scored three goals to lead the Knights to a 10-0 win over BTW Magnet on Thursday night.

Owens had three goals and assisted on two others, while Johnson had three goals and an assist. Anna Russo added two goals and two assists, Claire Aaron added a goal and senior Olivia Celka had a goal in her first game back after knee surgery. Aurora Lemuz and Bella Palomino each had a pair of assists.

Goalkeeper Kyleigh Harris recorded her third shutout of the season, although there were no shots on goals or saves because the defense of Aaron, Heather Walski, Joanna Marlow and Chayse Jordan didn’t allow BTW Magnet to get close enough to take a shot.

Catholic (4-1) returns home to host their first area game on Tuesday against Booker T. Washington.
