SATURDAY RECAP: Lilly leads STJ girls to win in Auburn; PCA wrestling finishes second in own tourney

BOYS BASKETBALL

Pike Road 82, Prattville 63

Cameron Lewis scored 17 points, three rebounds and four steals as the Lions jumped out to a quick lead but couldn’t hold on in the second half of the third-place game in the 30th annual Jack Schweers Capital City Classic at Trinity on Saturday.

Lewis was named to the all-tournament team for his performance in the tournament. Jordan Holmes was named to the all-tournament team from Pike Road.

JaDon Autuneh-EL added 11 points, five rebounds and two steals for the Lions.

Prattville (7-12) will take off for Christmas, returning to action next weekend in the Big Orange Classic at Hoover High.

 

Catholic 68, BTW Magnet 38

JJ Williams hit four 3-pointers and finished with 14 points to lead a balanced attack as the Knights overcame a sloppy start to defeat BTW Magnet 68-38 in the seventh-place game in the 30th annual Jack Schweers Capital City Classic at Trinity on Saturday.

Mylez Gourdine and PJ Evans added 11 points for Catholic, followed by MJ Belser with 10. Evans was named to the all-tournament team for Catholic.

Michael Reese led BTW Magnet with 16 points, followed by Christopher Brown with 12. Jalen Sloan was named to the all-tournament team from BTW Magnet.

Catholic (2-3) will take off for Christmas and return to action next weekend in the Park Crossing Christmas Tournament.  

 

Montevallo 57, Prattville Christian 40

Prattville Christian cut the lead to single digits in the second quarter but couldn’t maintain the pace in the second half as the Bulldogs pulled away to a 57-40 win over the Panthers in the 30th annual Jack Schweers Capital City Classic at Trinity on Saturday.

Justin Chapman led the Panthers with 16 points and 15 rebounds. Cody Chapman scored 12 points and was named to the all-tournament team for his performance. Wade Mora added eight points, eight rebounds and four steals. Carter Fiacco had seven rebounds and five assists.

Dee Cutts was named to the all-tournament team from Montevallo.

PCA (4-12) will take off for Christmas, resuming play next weekend in the Supreme Courts Christmas Tournament in Guntersville.

 

Escambia Academy 44, Macon East Academy 29

CANOE -- Jackson Todd had 13 points and two rebounds for the Knights in their 44-29 loss on Saturday in the Escambia Academy gym.

Macon East will face Valiant Cross on Monday.

 

GIRLS BASKETBALL

St. James 71, Hewitt-Trussville 55

Eighth grader Morgan Lilly scored a career high 32 points, hitting five 3-pointers and grabbing five rebounds in the third-place game at Auburn High’s Reindeer Rumble Tournament on Saturday.

Natalie Barton added 13 points, seven rebounds, three steals and five assists against the Class 7A Huskies, followed by Jordyn McRae with 13 points, six rebounds and four steals. Freshman, Kaden Fair came off the bench to score 10 points.  

St. James (15-2) will return to action next Friday vs. Madison Academy at St. John Paul II.  

 

Montgomery Academy 32, G.W. Long 30

Caroline Waller had 13 points, five rebounds, four steals and four deflections to lead the Eagles to a 32-30 win over G.W. Long in the game for fifth place in the 30th annual Jack Schweers Capital City Classic at Trinity on Saturday.

EG Hines added seven points, three steals, four deflections and a rebound, followed by Sophia Cho with six points, four assists, three deflections, five steals and three rebounds. Bailey Davis also had five points, four deflections, five steals, two rebounds, a pair of blocked shots and an assist. Bennett Britt collected a team-high nine rebounds as well.

Hines was named to the all-tournament team for her performance in the tournament.

Montgomery Academy (3-9) will return to action after Christmas as they host Cottage Hill Christian, Selma and Wetumpka in the first MA Eagle Holiday Classic next Friday and Saturday.

 

Midfield 63, Prattville Christian 44

Kayden Carr had 21 points and six rebounds to lead Prattville Christian in the Panthers’ 63-44 loss to Midfield in the third-place game in the 30th annual Jack Schweers Capital City Classic on Saturday at Trinity.

Carr was named to the all-tournament team for her performance in the tournament.

Jenna McClendon added 18 points and 15 rebounds, Reagan Houston scored three points and Ally Blankinchip grabbed six rebounds.

PCA (10-6) will take off for Christmas, returning to play in the Supreme Courts Christmas Tournament in Guntersville next Friday and Saturday.

 

Macon East Academy 57, Escambia Academy 31

CANOE -- Jamya Powell had 21 points, 25 rebounds and a steal to lead the Knights to a 57-31 win in the Escambia Academy gym on Saturday afternoon.

Mya Tatum added 16 points, eight rebounds, four assists, five steals and a blocked shot for Macon East, which returns to action on Jan. 3 at Hooper Academy.

 

Vestavia Hills 64, St. James 57

AUBURN -- A cold-shooting St. James squad fell behind the Rebels early and never caught up in the second day of the Reindeer Rumble Tournament at Auburn High on Friday.

The Trojans shot 6 of 26 from the field in the first half to fall behind 35-16 at the half.  St. James responded in the third quarter with a 29-13 run, but it was not enough to pull off the win against the strong senior laden 7A squad.

Freshman Kaitlin Mitchell, scored a career high 26 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to record the double double.  Morgan Lilly added 12 points.  Natalie Barton added 11 points, seven rebounds, three steals and four assists.  

St. James (14-2) will face Hewitt-Trussville in the tournament on Saturday. 

WRESTLING

Prattville Christian places second in PCA Duals tournament on Saturday

PRATTVILLE -- The Prattville Christian wrestling team hosted the 13th annual PCA Duals tournament on Saturday, with Bayshore Christian, Bayside Academy, Catholic, T.R. Miller, Holtville, Fultondale, St. James, Carver and Houston Academy all attending the two-pool tournament.  

The Panther wrestling team finished tied with Bayside Academy and Catholic in Pool A and came away as the Pool A champion on criteria.  

PCA ended up taking on the Holtville Bulldogs in the championship dual with Holtville coming away as the tournament champions, beating PCA on criteria after the dual finished tied.  Fultondale finished third, followed by Bayside Academy.  

PCA defeated Bayshore Christian 54-24 and Bayside Academy 45-36 before losing to Catholic 42-36. The Panthers rebounded with a 46-35 win over T.R. Miller before losing to Holtville 43-42.

For PCA, Ryan Lueck, Elijah Harris, Brysen Pugh and Bryson Bowman all went undefeated in the tournament.
