SPRING UPDATE: MA baseball battles in Foley tourney; St. James softball wins three in Gulf Shores

BASEBALL

Foley 10, Montgomery Academy 9

FOLEY -- Montgomery Academy had its 10-game winning streak snapped on Friday night in a 10-9 loss at Class 7A Foley.

The Eagles were led at the plate by Paxton Haigler and Oscar Fiore who each had three hits. Fiore finished with an RBI. William Marks had two hits and Andrew Hosein had a hit with two RBIs. Reid McBride, Kingston Nelson, Vincent Desautels, and Finley Haigler all had an RBI each.

Trailing 9-3, Montgomery Academy roared back with six runs in the top of the seventh, only to see Foley hit a walkoff single in the bottom half of the inning.

McBride got the start on the mound and threw four innings, allowing four hits and five runs while striking out two. Hosein came in relief and gave up a run. Jarrett Friendly relieved Hosein, pitching 2.1 innings and giving up three hits and two runs while striking out three.

Montgomery Academy (10-2) will return to action on Monday at Reeltown at 4:30 p.m.

Montgomery Academy 6, Andalusia 5 (9)

ANDALUSIA -- Kingston Nelson went 3 for 4 and drove in a pair of runs as the Eagles won a nine-inning thriller at Andalusia High on Wednesday.

Vincent Desautels and William Marks each had two hits with Marks having an RBI. Paxton Haigler, Reid McBride, Chapman Baker and Finley Haigler all had a hit with McBride having two RBIs.

Desautels got the start on the mound and allowed just two hits on two runs over four innings while striking out three. Marks pitched four innings of relief, surrendering five hits and two runs with three strikeouts. Andrew Hosein closed the door in the final inning.

Lee-Scott Academy 16, Beulah 5

BEULAH -- Sam Jackson went 2 for 5 with a home run, scoring three runs and driving in five more, as the Warriors defeated Beulah 16-5 in a 3A Area 6 game at Beulah on Friday.

Max Hammer also homered for the Warriors, going 2 for 3, scoring twice and driving in a pair of runs.

Easton Gregory went 3 for 5, scored twice and drove in a run, Allen Owen went 3 for 4, scored twice and had two RBIs, Harrison Snow went 2 for 5 with a pair of RBIs and Haiden Harper went 3 for 4 and scored three times.

Barrett Cook picked up the win, allowing six hits and five runs, three earned, in 4.1 innings while walking five and striking out three. Harrison Short pitched the final 2.2 innings, allowing no runs on no hits while striking out five.

James Siggers went 2 for 3 with a double, scoring two runs and driving in another to lead Beulah. Jadin Hancock went 2 for 4 with a double and two RBIs and Devin Suggs had a pair of RBIs.

Wesley Grant was the losing pitcher, allowing six runs on six hits in 3.2 innings.

Lee-Scott Academy 2, Beulah 1

AUBURN -- Braden Martin and Harrison Short scattered five hits as the Warriors defeated Beulah 2-1 in a 3A Area 6 game at Lee-Scott on Thursday.

Martin pitched six innings of shutout ball, allowing four hits and walking four while striking out 12. Short pitched the seventh inning, allowing one run on one hit while striking out one.

Easton Gregory, Allen Owen, Sam Jackson and Ty Jones all went 1 for 3, with Jackson and Jones each driving in a run.

Wesley Grant went 2 for 2 with a pair of walks and Devin Suggs went 1 for 2 with a double to lead Beulah.

Brady Blakston took the loss, allowing four hits and two runs, one earned, in six innings.

SOFTBALL

Daphne 4, St. James 0

GULF SHORES -- Vic Moten pitched a perfect game in the circle and homered at the plate to lead Daphne to a 4-0 win over St. James in the semifinals of the Gulf Coast Classic on Wednesday at the Gulf Shores Sportsplex.

Daphne went on to win the Gulf Coast Classic with a 5-2 win over Summertown (Tenn.) in the championship game.

Moten struck out 13 of the 21 batters she faced, holding the Trojans off the bases over seven innings. At the plate, the Alabama signee was 1 for 2, including a solo home run off of St. James’ ace Emily Needham.

Mariah Williams added a pinch-hit RBI double, Aubrey Gregg was 1 for 1 with an RBI and Karsyn Barnett was 1 for 3 with an RBI.

Needham allowed seven hits and four runs in six innings, walking one and striking out eight.

St. James (23-5) finished third in the Gulf Coast Classic and will return home to play area games against Montgomery Academy on Monday and Alabama Christian on Tuesday.

St. James 7, Alexandria 0

GULF SHORES -- Emily Needham pitched a three hitter over six innings to help the Trojans avenge a Monday loss to Alexandria, beating the Valley Cubs 7-0 in the quarterfinals of the Gulf Coast Classic on Wednesday at the Gulf Shores Sportsplex.

Needham walked one and struck out seven, holding Alexandria to a trio of singles by Charlee Parris, Kaden Pritchett and Matti Carr.

Sydney Johnston went 3 for 4 and scored a run, while Mary Olive Maddox went 1 for 2, scored once and drove in a pair of runs to lead the Trojans. Kaitlyn Hudson, Ava Stanford, Tat Shuford and Arden Green all went 2 for 4, with Stanford driving in a run and Green driving in two.

Pressley Slaton was tagged with the loss, allowing 15 hits and seven runs in six innings.

St. James (23-4) advanced to the semifinals of the tournament against Daphne.

St. James 9, Grace Christian Academy 4

GULF SHORES -- Tat Shuford, Ava Stanford and Mary Olive Maddox all had two RBIs as St. James advanced to the quarterfinals of the Gulf Coast Classic with a 9-4 win over the Rams on Wednesday.

Stanford went 3 for 3, scoring twice and driving in a pair of runs, Shuford went 2 for 4 with two RBIs and Maddox went 2 for 3 with a pair of RBIs to lead the Trojans to victory. Emily Darby went 2 for 3 with an RBI as well in the win over the Knoxville, Tenn., school.

Emily Needham pitched the first three innings, giving up a solo home run to Hayden Hill. Aleigha Davis pitched the final two innings, allowing five hits and three runs.

Hill went 2 for 3 and scored twice for the Rams, while Hannah Hodges went 2 for 3 and drove in a pair of runs.

St. James (22-4) advanced to the quarterfinals and a rematch with Alexandria.

St. James 10, Collierville (Tenn.) 5

GULF SHORES -- St. James scored four runs in the third inning and four more in the fourth to rally past the Dragons 10-5 in the Gulf Coast Classic on Wednesday morning at the Gulf Shores Sportsplex.

Ava Stanford went 1 for 2 with a triple, scoring twice and driving in a pair of runs, to break open the game. Arden Green went 2 for 3 with a pair of RBIs, Tat Shuford drove in a pair of runs, Sydney Johnston went 2 for 3, scored twice and drove in a run and Kaitlyn Hudson went 2 for 4 and scored twice.

Neyla Rogers went 2 for 2 with a triple and drove in a pair of runs for Collierville. Ashlyne Gerrey went 1 for 2 with an RBI, Braylie Wertz went 1 for 3 with an RBI and Karington Mitchell went 1 for 3 with a double and an RBI for the Dragons.

Kylie Mayfield, the second of three pitchers, was tagged with the loss, surrendering four runs on two hits and two walks.

Peyton Middleton allowed eight hits and five runs in four innings, walking two and striking out four. Emily Needham pitched the fifth inning, striking out two.

GIRLS SOCCER

Catholic 8, Tallassee 0

TALLASSEE -- Anna Russo scored four goals as the Knights remained undefeated in area play with an 8-0 win over Tallassee on Wednesday.

Russo scored the game’s first goal with an assist from Kate Johnson, scored the next two unassisted and scored her fourth goal with another assist from Johnson for a 4-0 lead.

Aurora Lemuz scored a pair of goals, the first with an assist by Kendall Johnson, the second with an assist from Russo, Eryn Owens added a goal and Kate Johnson scored a goal with an assist from Bella Palomino.

Catholic took a total of 64 shots, including 38 on goal. Tallassee goalkeeper Jhakhia Anderson had 30 saves.

Catholic goalkeeper Kyleigh Harris recorded her seventh shutout of the year with no shots on goal,

Catholic (11-2) improved to 5-0 in area play and will travel to Trinity on Tuesday for an area game at 5:30 p.m.
