SPRING PREPS: ACA baseball wins in Gulf Shores; Catholic soccer shuts out Dale County

BASEBALL

Alabama Christian 14, Victory Christian 1 (4)

FOLEY -- Landon Nelson pitched a two hitter, striking out nine over four innings, as the Eagles defeated Victory Christian of Tulsa, Okla., in the Gulf Coast Classic at Foley High on Wednesday.

ACA (6-9) completed its four-game schedule in the tournament with a 2-2 record and will resume play on Monday at Greenville and on Tuesday at Catholic.  

Nelson went 2 for 3 at the plate with a double and three RBIs, while Mac Moorer went 2 for 3 and scored three runs, Grant Cornette went 2 for 3 with three RBIs and Jackson Burton went 1 for 2 with a grand slam.

Cam Sutton went 1 for 3 with an RBI, Zander Costanza went 1 for 2 and Bryson Dabney went 1 for 2 and scored a pair of runs.

Lowndes Academy 12, Sparta Academy 3 (5)

EVERGREEN -- Pierson Hill, Cooper Dansby and Reid Owen combined on a one-hitter as the Rebels defeated Sparta Academy 12-3 on Tuesday.

Hill allowed two runs, none earned, on one hit and four walks while striking out six in four innings of work. Dansby pitched a third of an inning, allowing an unearned run while walking one and Owen got the final two outs, pitching no-hit ball in the fifth.

Hagen Robinson had Sparta’s only hit.

At the plate, Dominic Dougan went 2 for 3, scored twice and drove in a pair of runs. Bradyn Stokes went 1 for 4, scored a run and drove in two.

SOFTBALL

Central-Phenix City 9, St. James 4 (4)

GULF SHORES -- Kayla Storey pitched a four hitter and held St. James to one earned run to help the Red Devils to a 9-4 victory in the semifinals of the Gulf Coast Classic at the Gulf Shores Sportsplex on Wednesday.

Storey pitched three innings, allowing four runs, one earned, on four hits while walking two and striking out one. Ariauna Shorter pitched the fourth inning, retiring the side in order.

St. James managed just four hits, one each from Emily Darby, Tat Shuford, Mary Olive Maddox and Arden Green. Shuford, Maddox and Green drove in runs.

Peyton Middleton took the loss in the circle, allowing seven runs on 10 hits in two innings while walking two and striking out two. Aleghia Davis pitched the third inning, allowing two runs, one earned, on one hit while walking one.

Ally Supan went 3 for 3, scored three runs and drove in three more to lead the Red Devils (13-1-1) into the championship game. Khloe Broadwater went 2 for 3 and drove in a pair of runs and Mariah Harrison went 2 for 2 and drove in a pair of runs.

St. James (16-1) returns home for a 3A Area 6 game with Montgomery Academy at home on Tuesday and a home game with Prattville Christian on Thursday.

St. James 3, White House 1 (6)

GULF SHORES -- Emily Needham pitched a two hitter against the Blue Devils as the Trojans defeated White House for the second time in three days in the quarterfinals of the Gulf Coast Classic at the Gulf Shores Sportsplex on Wednesday.

Needham allowed just one run over six innings, walking three and striking out eight.

Tat Shuford drove in a pair of runs and Ava Stanford drove in the other for the Trojans (16-0). Emily Darby went 2 for 2 with a double to lead the offense.

Leah Franck drove in the Blue Devils’ only run with an RBI double. Leigh Ann Sanders, who took the loss in the circle, had the other hit.

St. James 6, Hale County 0 (5)

GULF SHORES -- Peyton Middleton and Aleghia Davis combined on a one-hit shutout as the Trojans defeated Hale County 6-0 on Wednesday in the opening round of bracket play at the Gulf Coast Classic.

Middleton pitched four innings, allowing one hit while walking two and striking out three. Davis pitched the fifth inning, walking two and striking out one.

At the plate, Kaitlin Hudson went 1 for 2, scored a pair of runs and had two RBIs and Emily Darby went 3 for 3 with a run scored and an RBI for the Trojans (15-0).

Summer Stephens had the lone hit for the Wildcats. Rylan Channell took the loss in the circle, allowing five runs on seven hits in three innings.

St. James 4, Goodpasture Christian 1

GULF SHORES -- Emily Needham allowed just one run on six hits while walking two and striking out 10 in a five-inning performance as the Trojans defeated Goodpasture in the Gulf Coast Classic at Gulf Shores Sportsplex on Tuesday.

St. James (14-0) was seeded third in bracket play after going 4-0 in pool play and will face the Hale County-Buff Island in Wednesday’s first round at noon. The winner will face the White House-Portland winner in the quarterfinals at 2 p.m. Semifinals will be at 4 p.m., followed by the finals at 6 p.m.

St. James scored all of its runs in the first inning. Sydney Johnston went 2 for 3 with a run scored and an RBI, Needham went 1 for 1 with a double and an RBI and Tat Shuford had the Trojans’ other hit, going 1 for 3.

Brooklyn Jones and Faith Brown each went 2 for 3 to lead Goodpasture, Brown’s double drove in the Cougars’ only run. Brown took the loss in the circle, surrendering four unearned runs in the first inning while allowing just two hits and two walks.

St. James 12, Greene County Tech 8

GULF SHORES -- Kaitlin Hudson and Lily Stanford each drove in three runs as the Trojans scored four runs in the fourth and five in the fifth to erase a 7-3 deficit and defeat Greene County Tech in the Gulf Coast Classic at Gulf Shores Sportsplex on Tuesday morning.

St. James (13-0) had a bases-clearing triple from Hudson, who went 1 for 4, and a 2-for-2 performance from Stanford, who scored a pair of runs, to erase an early deficit. Sydney Johnston went 1 for 3 with a run scored and two RBIs, Arden Green went 2 for 2 and scored a pair of runs and Emily Darby went 1 for 4 with a double and an RBI.

Peyton Middleton pitched the first 2.2 innings for the Trojans, allowing seven hits and seven runs, five earned, while walking one. Aleigha Davis picked up the win in relief, pitching 1.1 innings, surrendering just one hit and one walk. Emily Needham pitched the seventh, giving up a run on two hits while striking out two.

Emmy Thomason and Calleigh Newberry each drove in a pair of runs for the Golden Eagles (3-3). Lexis Covington took the loss in the circle, allowing 12 runs, 10 earned, on 10 hits while striking out two and walking five in five innings.

Pike Road 14, Smiths Station 3

PIKE ROAD -- Anna Williams, Addison Belyeu, Ava Milton and Paisley Forshey all drove in a pair of runs as the Patriots cruised to a 14-3 win over Smiths Station on Tuesday.

Haley Melton picked up the win in the circle, allowing seven hits and three runs, striking out one and walking one in five innings of work.

Williams went 3 for 4 with a triple, Belyeu went 2 for 3 with a double and Milton went 2 for 3 with a double to lead the offense. Kelsey Williams went 2 for 2 with a walk, a stolen base, and an RBI, Forshey had a two-run single and a stolen base, Melton added a double and Ameria Anderson had a single and drew three walks.  

Madison Gary went 3 for 3 to lead the Panthers and McKenzie Lester had a double and an RBI.

Pike Road (11-6) will travel to Holtville on Thursday and to Lagoon Park on Friday and Saturday for the FCA Alex Wilcox Memorial Softball Tournament. The Patriots will face Spanish Fort on Friday and Mary Montgomery on Saturday in pool play.

Prattville 2, Marbury 0

PRATTVILLE -- Kaytie Chandler pitched a one-hit shutout with nine strikeouts in a complete-game performance as the Lions defeated the Bulldogs 2-0 on Tuesday.

Addi Lee went 1 for 3 with a double and a run scored, Kennedy Crump went 1 for 2 and Zandia Bozeman and Mady Cate Lindsey both drove in runs for the Lions.

Prattville (6-6) will put its unbeaten (2-0) area record on the line Thursday with a game at Dothan.

BOYS SOCCER

Catholic 6, Dale County 0

Ben Chitlik scored three goals to help the Knights defeat Dale County in a 4A Area 2 matchup at Catholic on Tuesday night.

Max Freeman, Tymari Isner and Ariyn Gilbert scored the other goals for the Knights. Isner assisted on three of the goals, Joe Reeves assisted on a pair of goals and Tony Lemuz added an assist.

Catholic (10-3) improved to 6-1 in area play with the win and will travel to the Emory Folmar YMCA Soccer Complex on Thursday for an area game with LAMP. The Knights will then take their spring break and resume play on April 9 at home against LAMP.
