SPRING RECAP: St. James, LAMP open baseball season with wins
BASEBALL
St. James 6, Catholic 3
Despite missing several key starters still participating in basketball, the Trojans spotted the Knights three early runs before scoring six unanswered to take the first game of the season on Thursday.
Catholic scored the first run of the game in the first inning on a two-out Alex Weiser double and a Pat Ryan single. They added two more in the third off starting pitcher Foster Rasmussen. Hudson Parrish and Justin Rose started with a single and a hit batsman. After a sacrifice, Parrish scored on Ryan’s fielder’s choice and Caleb McCreary knocked in the Knights’ final run with a two-out single.
Saint James would plate two of their own in the bottom half of the third. Cole Anderson reached on a one-out error and scored on a double by Shaun Bridges, who led the Trojans with three hits in four at bats. Bridges would advance to third on a fly ball to the outfield and scored on a Clint Shores’ base hit.
Adam Garnett took over pitching for Saint James in the fifth inning and held the Knights to no runs on two hits in three innings for his first win of the season.
Saint James took the lead with three runs in the bottom of the fifth. Bridges and Rasmussen led off with singles. Bridges would score on a double play. Michael Winn then doubled and his pinch runner Arial July scored when Garnett reached on an error. Garnett would then score on a single by Carter Carroll.
The Trojans added an insurance run in the sixth when Caden Anderson was hit by a pitch, stole second base, and later scored on a Bridges’ double.
Saint James travels to Stanhope Elmore on Friday and to Jemison on Monday.
The Trojan junior varsity defeated Catholic 9-2 in a rain-shortened game following the varsity win. They will also travel to Stanhope Elmore before participating in the Prattville Christian junior varsity tournament next week.
