SPRING RECAP: Trinity baseball tops ACA; PCA soccer rips BTW

BASEBALL 

Trinity 1, Alabama Christian Academy 0

Grayson Ashe and Ben Easterling combined on a three-hitter as the Wildcats shut out ACA 1-0 at the AUM Dixie Majors Field on Friday night.

Ashe allowed just two hits while striking out seven in pitching 5.1 innings. Easterling pitched the remaining 1.2 innings, allowing one hit while striking out two and walking one.

The two schools’ junior varsity team met a day earlier in the Prattville Christian Academy tournament, with Trinity taking a 6-0 victory to improve to 2-0-1.

Wilson Albrecht had two hits to lead the Wildcats. Ross Sanders,Gavin Hunter and Matthew Scroll each added a hit. 

Brady Bennett picked up the win on the mound, striking out three in three innings of work.

 

LAMP 14, Brewbaker Tech 4

LAMP scored five times in the first inning, with the big blow coming on a bases-clearing double by senior Junseo Park, en route to a 14-4 victory over Brew Tech Thursday.

Park also scored a team-high three times, while fellow senior Oliver Stephens added three runs batted in. Stephens and junior Josh Donaldson finished with a team-best three hits.

Junior Josh Bell started for the Tigers (2-0) on the mound, striking out four in two innings of work, while allowing five hits and four runs. Donaldson, senior Preston Stephens and sophomore Carter Lehman combined to scatter just three hits over the final five innings, striking out six and walking just three to complete the victory.

LAMP will return to action Saturday when it travels to Reeltown for a noon contest. The Tigers will also play Russell County at 2 p.m.

In the junior varsity game, freshman Caden Carpenter struck out 10 in five innings and also drove in the game-winning run at the plate to lead LAMP past Brew Tech 2-1. 

Carpenter scattered four hits and walked just one to earn his first victory of the season on the mound.

LAMP trailed 1-0 heading to the fourth inning, but tied the score on an inside-the-park home run by freshman Elliott Farrior. Farrior, who never slowed down out of the box, hit a line drive to right field that got past Pierce Wright and was lost in the outfield grass, allowing Farrior to score the tying run. 

Carpenter put the Tigers up in the top of the fifth inning when he reached on a fielding error by the Rams. Seventh grader Oliver Blackburn led off the frame with a single to left field and moved to third on a double by freshman Blair Davenport, setting up the game-winning RBI.

The LAMP JV team will return to action on Tuesday when it takes on Park Crossing JV at Paterson Field at 6 p.m.

Macon East Academy 8, Southern Academy 0

SELMA -- Deonte Powell pitched 4.2 innings of shutout ball, allowing just four hits while striking out six as the Knights won their first-round game in Morgan Academy’s Pepsi Classic on Thursday afternoon.

Macon East struggled with the bats, managing just seven hits as the Knights were forced to play without four starters sidelined with the flu.

Khamani Driver went 1 for 2 at the plate with a double while driving in three runs to lead the Knights on offense. Camden Bell, Matthew Kitchens, Dalton Nickles and Hunter Timmerman all finished with a hit and an RBI, while Luke Noffsinger, Thaddeus Mckinney and Bryant Rascoll all had a hit. 

 

Macon East Academy 3, Wilcox Academy 2

SELMA -- The Knights wrapped up play in Thursday’s round in the Morgan Academy Pepsi Classic with a 3-2 win over Wilcox, thanks to the pitching of Hunter Timmerman. 

The junior pitched a gem, allowing just three hits and two walks while pitching a shutout over the first five innings he was on the mound. 

Timmerman’s pitching was key as the Knights continued to struggle at the plate with four starters sidelined by the flu. Macon East managed just four hits, led by Zach Brown 1-for-2 performance that included an RBI. Dalton Nickles, Luke Noffsinger and Deonte Powell all finished the game with a hit.

Macon East (8-1) returns to Selma on Saturday to complete play in the bracket part of the tournament.

The tournament resumes today with Clarke Prep and Bessemer at noon, Clarke Prep and Chambers at 2 p.m., Chambers and Bessemer at 4 p.m. and Southern and Morgan at 6 p.m.

After the eight teams are seeded, they will resume play in the single-elimination quarterfinals on Saturday beginning at 8 a.m. The semifinals will be held at 4 p.m. and 6 p.m., with the championship game set for 8 p.m. 

 

GIRLS TENNIS

Montgomery Academy 9, Valley 0

The Eagles made quick work of Valley on Thursday, sweeping singles and doubles without dropping a single game. 

Winning in singles were Gabby Barrera, Jenna Chandler, Mae Mae Voltz, Kareena Singh, Clara Ryan and Mary Lee Kelso. In doubles, the teams of Chandler-Voltz, Barrera-Ryan and Kelso-Cate Peeples posted shutouts as well. 

Montgomery Academy (7-1) improved to 3-0 in sectional play.

 

Montgomery Academy 5, Jasper 0

JASPER -- Montgomery Academy traveled to Jasper on Wednesday and secured a 5-0 victory that was halted by afternoon thunderstorms.

Jasper, which finished third in 4A-5A in 2019 and sixth last year in 6A, dropped all three doubles matches to the Eagles and two of the singles’ matches before rain halted the competition. Montgomery Academy was leading in two of the three singles’ matches at the time but the five points garnered from the completed doubles and singles competition had already determined the winner. 

In doubles, Jenna Chandler and Mae Mae Voltz defeated Sophia Poolos and Riley Aldridge 8-1 at No. 1; Gabby Barrera and Clara Ryan beat Anna Grace Lee and Ady Preston 8-3 at No. 2; and Mary Lee Kelso and Marianna Lassner defeated Madison Moore and Maitland Baxter 8-2 at No. 3.

Chandler and Kelso won their singles’ matches as well. 

Montgomery Academy (6-1) returns home to face Valley on Thursday in a sectional match. 

 

BOYS SOCCER

Prattville Christian 10, BTW Magnet 0

PRATTVILLE -- Trey Barkley scored four goals and added an assist as the Panthers opened the season with a 10-0 shutout of BTW Magnet on Friday night.

Cohen Palmore added three goals and Cade Segars had two goals and an assist. Jacob Hollon had a goal and an assist and Carson Roberson and Liam Taylor each had one assist. 

Dawson Thweatt and Adam Grier combined for the shutout in goal. 

PCA (1-0) will play host to Catholic on Monday night. 

 

GIRLS SOCCER

Prattville Christian 3, BTW Magnet 1

PRATTVILLE -- Ella Pegg led the Lady Panthers with a pair of goals and an assist as PCA won its season opener 3-1 over BTW Magnet on Friday night.

Chloe Steakley scored the Panthers’ other goal and Emily Branch had an assist. Kendall Jordan recorded 16 saves in goal. 

PCA (1-0) will play host to Catholic on Monday night.
