SPRING ROUNDUP: Marbury falls in 5A semis; Trinity, LAMP win in baseball

BIRMINGHAM – Carver-Birmingham had little trouble with Marbury, which was making its first-ever trip to the AHSAA state semifinals on Saturday.
Destinee Nelson scored 25 points, point guard Randrea Wright added 23 points and five assists, as the Rams (28-5) defeated Marbury, 70-40, in Saturday’s Class 5A Girls semifinals at Bill Harris Arena at the Birmingham Crossplex.
Carver built a double-digit halftime lead Saturday by holding Marbury (22-8) to just four points in the second quarter. Nelson nailed two 3-pointers in the opening minute of the second half to get the Rams rolling.
Carver’s Tamia Muse added nine points, five assists and five steals, and Precious Sturdivant had five points, 18 rebounds and seven blocked shots.
Sanders scored 13 points to lead Marbury (18-5). Jazalyn Morrissette had 11 points, six rebounds and three blocked shots, and Renijah Brown contributed 10 points, 10 rebounds and four assists.
Carver will play Mae Jemison (22-8) on Thursday at Bill Harris Arena.
BASEBALL
Trinity 8, St. James 2
Ben Easterling scattered seven hits in six innings of work while striking out seven to help the Wildcats defeat St. James on Saturday morning.
Grayson Ashe and William Roberson both went 1 for 2 and drove in a run for the Wildcats, while Coleman Stanley went 2 for 3.
Trinity (2-2) returns to action on Tuesday in the 28th annual FCA Jason Armstrong Memorial Baseball Tournament at Riverwalk Stadium, facing Billingsley at 2 p.m.
LAMP 9, Reeltown 8
REELTOWN – Preston Stephens had three hits with a double while Will Robinson pitched four and two-thirds innings, striking out five to lead the Golden Tigers to the win.
LAMP will play in the Jason Armstrong FCA Tournament on Tuesday against Montgomery Catholic at Riverwalk Stadium.
Macon East Academy 6, Tuscaloosa Academy 3
TROY -- Kirkland Pugh pitched a strong five innings and Khamani Driver homered in the fifth inning to provide some offensive support as the Knights bounced back from an opening-round loss to Lee-Scott with a 6-3 win over Tuscaloosa in the Pike Liberal Arts tournament on Saturday morning.
Pugh allowed three hits and three runs over five innings while striking out three. Barrett Spaeth threw one inning in relief out of the bullpen.
Zach Brown, Stone Yarnell, Driver and Colby Cox each had a hit for Macon East (3-3).
Macon East Academy 9, Lee-Scott Academy 2
TROY -- Barrett Spaeth held Lee-Scott in check over five innings, scattering seven hits and allowing two runs to help the Knights defeat the Warriors 9-2 in the Pike Liberal Arts tournament on Saturday afternoon.
Khamani Driver, Gunner Justice and Luke Noffsinger each had a pair of hits to lead the Knights (4-3).
Bessemer Academy 14, Macon East Academy 2
TROY -- The Knights closed out play in the Pike Liberal Arts tournament with a run-rule loss to the Rebels on Saturday night.
Garrett Barrentine picked up the win for Bessemer, allowing just three hits and two runs over four innings while striking out four.
Shelton Lee took the loss for Macon East (4-4), giving up seven runs on seven hits in two innings. Colby Cox went 2 for 2 to lead the Knights at the plate.
Macon East’s next game is a region game scheduled for Tuesday at home against Lakeside at 4 p.m.
SOFTBALL
Alabama Christian 10, Dale County 6
AUBURN -- The Eagles got some much-needed run support from its two youngest varsity players as Kinlee Taylor hit a grand slam and Izzy Warrick scored four times as the pair of eighth graders helped Alabama Christian past Dale County in a tournament at Auburn.
Taylor hit a first-inning grand slam to get the Eagles’ offense rolling and Warrick had three hits and scored four runs for ACA. Warrick picked up the win in the circle as well, allowing just two earned runs in five innings of work.
Haley Ingram added three hits for the Eagles while Hayley Cassidy drove in three runs.
ACA (3-6) closed out play in the tournament with an 11-0 loss to Beauregard. The Eagles travel to Alexander City on Thursday to play Benjamin Russell.
GIRLS SOCCER
Prattville 4, Prattville Christian 0
PRATTVILLE -- For the second consecutive game, the Panthers failed to generate any offense as the 7A Lions shut out PCA 4-0 at Stanley-Jensen Stadium on Saturday.
PCA (0-2) will play in the Alabama Sports Officials Foundation Soccer Tournament in Oxford next Friday and Saturday.
