Montgomery Academy 3, Helena 1
Hayes Lachney assisted on the first two goals, then scored an important game-clinching goal to help the Eagles defeat Helena 3-1 and capture the championship of the Capital of Dreams High School Classic at Emory Folmar Soccer Complex on Saturday.
Hampton Welch scored the game’s first goal with an assist from Lachney and Jacob Stubblefield gave the Eagles the lead with a goal assisted by Lachney.
Lachney scored the Eagles’ third goal with an assist from Tanner Bartgis.
Montgomery Academy (3-0) travels to Homewood on Tuesday at 7 p.m. before returning home to play host to Trinity on Thursday at 7:15 p.m.

Montgomery Academy 2, Benjamin Russell 1
The Eagles rallied for two goals in the second half to defeat Benjamin Russell in the Capital of Dreams High School Classic at the Emory Folmar Soccer Complex on Saturday morning.
The Eagles started the game well, maintaining possession and controlling the tempo but despite the promising start, Benjamin Russell capitalized on a well-worked opportunity and took the lead 20 minutes into the first half. Following the setback, Montgomery Academy responded with a series of attacking moves, creating several scoring chances but falling just short.
Entering the second half with determination, the Lady Eagles pushed forward in search of an equalizer. Their persistence paid off 10 minutes into the half when Mary Elizabeth Cole produced a stunning strike from 30 yards out, hitting a half-volley that soared over the goalkeeper and into the net. The momentum shifted in favor of Montgomery Academy, fueling their pursuit of a second goal.
Thirteen minutes later, a well-executed combination play led to Lucy Hubbard winning a corner. Mary Elizabeth Cole delivered a perfectly placed ball into the box, where Kerstin Daniels rose above the defense to head it into the top corner, securing a 2-1 lead and the victory.
Montgomery Academy 1, Florence 0
The Montgomery Academy Lady Eagles entered the final game of the Capital of Dreams High School Classic knowing that a victory would secure the championship title. Facing a resilient Florence team, the Eagles delivered a determined and disciplined performance to claim the trophy.
The Lady Eagles started the match with intensity and immediately set the tone. Just two minutes into the game, Valentina Rubio played a perfectly weighted through ball to Mary Elizabeth Cole, who skillfully rounded the goalkeeper and slotted the ball into the open net to give Montgomery Academy an early lead.
Following the goal, the Lady Eagles controlled possession effectively, creating several promising opportunities while maintaining defensive composure. Florence, eager to secure their first win of the tournament, brought a physical challenge, but the Lady Eagles remained resolute to preserve their lead.
At the final whistle, Montgomery Academy (2-1) emerged victorious, securing the Capital of Dreams High School Classic Championship with a hard-fought win.

Montgomery Academy wins Trojan Tennis Classic
MUSCLE SHOALS -- Montgomery Academy captured the championship of the Trojan Tennis Classic on Saturday as the No. 1 doubles team of John Alford and Jackson Brown defeated Florence High School 2-6, 6-4, 10-8 to lead the way for the Eagles.
The No. 2 doubles team of Ford Morano and Edwin Wu defeated James Clemons High School 6-1, 6-2 while the No. 3 doubles team of Anton Yang and Bo Johnston beat Florence High School 6-1, 6-4.
Just before the finals in doubles, No. 4 singles Edwin Wu defeated James Clemons High School 6-1, 4-6, 10-3 and No. 5 Duncan McInnes also defeated James Clemons 6-1, 6-2 to win singles titles.
The Eagles had 47 points with Florence High School finishing second with 35 points and James Clemons finishing third with 26 points.
The Eagles (4-0) will be back in action on Tuesday with a section match at Auburn High School.
