THURSDAY PREPS: Carver gets important region win over arch-rivals; QB Club names POW

The G.W. Carver Wolverines used a methodical approach offensively in a 17-0 win over Westside rival Sidney Lanier on Thursday at Cramton Bowl.

The Wolverines fed off a touchdown on the opening kickoff for 85 yards by Juwon Gaston, his fifth kick return for a score this season, giving Carver a 7-0 lead.

The Wolverines added to the lead in the second quarter on a 3-yard run by Karl Ligon for a 14-0 lead.

Lanier never really threatened in the game and was held to just 34 yards in the air and suffered four turnovers with two fumbles and two interceptions.

Carl Hopkins added a 25-yard field goal to close out the scoring with nine minutes left in the third period.

Ligon had 61 yards rushing to lead Carver. Carver quarterback Marquarius Moore combined 60 yards passing and 56 yards rushing  in the win.

Jacorian Wilson led the Poets with 67 yards rushing.

The Wolverines (5-3. 4-2) improved its playoff chances with the win and will await the outcome of Friday’s games with Lee playing Park Crossing and Eufaula playing Russell County. Carver entered the night in a four-way tie for second place in Class 6A, Region 2.

Lanier fell to 3-5 and 1-5 in region play.

QB Club names Boyd, Wallace as Players of Week

The Montgomery Quarterback Club has announced its Players of the Week for games of Oct. 8-9.

Mitchell Boyd from Edgewood Academy is the Private School Player of the Week and Harrison Wallace from Pike Road High School is the Public School Player of the Week.

Boyd, a senior running back, had 23 carries for 197 yards and touchdown in Edgewood’s 40-36 win over Chambers Academy. Boyd also caught the game winning 9-yard touchdown pass with 1:08 left in the game.

Wallace, a senior running back, had four carries for 97 yards and a touchdown In Pike Road’s 52-0 win over Headland. Wallace also had two catches for 77 yards, threw a 44-yard touchdown pass, and scored on a 95-yard kickoff return.
