THURSDAY PREPS: Carver's Trone provides spark in shut out of Park Crossing; Elmore County cruises

Last week, G.W. Carver introduced its new offensive weapon in quarterback Christian Johnson.

This week, the Wolverines provided another weapon in their arsenal with the introduction of running back Antonio Trone.

The former Stanhope Elmore standout rushed for 138 yards on just nine carries and scored one touchdown in the Wolverines’ 31-0 victory over city-rival Park Crossing on Thursday at Cramton Bowl.

The Wolverines mashed the Thunderbirds with 374 yards of total offense while holding Park Crossing to just 66 yards with no yards in the passing department.

Johnson also looked stellar again, passing for 214 yards on 15-of-23 attempts. He threw for four touchdowns including a couple to Jamar Green in the first half.

The Wolverines also got touchdown receptions from Laquenton Underwood and Marquan Jameson.

Trone got the final score of the night on a 6-yard run with 8:32 left in the third quarter.

The Thunderbirds attempted eight passes for the game between two quarterbacks, Amarion Duster and Jeremiah Kitt. Their best offensive performance came from Duster’s running game. He finished with 51 yards on 17 carries but was sacked five times.

The win opened Class 6A, Region 2 play for the Wolverines, who improved to 2-0 overall. Park Crossing fell to 0-2, 0-1 in region play.

The Wolverines will face Russell County next week while Park Crossing goes to Wetumpka.

Elmore County 48, Sylacauga 21

ECLECTIC - The Panthers improved to 3-0 while winning its first game in Class 5A, Region 4 on Thursday at Burt-Haynie Field.

The Panthers piled up 348 yards in total offense, led by CJ Wilkes, who ran for 223 yards and two touchdowns on 15 carries. Jabari Murphy added 113 yards in total offense with three scores. Murphy also had an 80-yard kickoff return for a touchdown.

Quarterback Peyton Stephenson passed for one TD and ran for another, finishing with 117 yards in total offense.

Elmore County is off to its best start since 2015 when it also opened the season 3-0.

The Panthers (3-0, 1-0) visit Central-Clay County next Friday while Sylacauga (0-3, 0-1) plays host to Valley.
