THURSDAY PREPS: Holtville rallies past Fultondale; Prattville flag football wins second straight

Holtville 28, Fultondale 24

FULTONDALE - Quarterback Keiland Baker passed for 155 yards and was responsible for two touchdowns in Holtville’s season-opening win over Fultondale at Wildcats Field on Thursday.

Baker’s 3-yard scamper with just over five minutes left in the game sealed the win for the Bulldogs.

Joshua Jeminez rushed for 75 yards and two touchdowns while Caleb Blackmon had 61 yards in receiving to lead the Bulldogs to the victory.

Jeminez also led the Holtville defense with seven tackles.

Fultondale lost for the 17th straight time, dating back to the 2021 season.

Holtville (1-0) stays on the road next week, visiting Alma Bryant.

Reeltown 41, Tallassee 14

REELTOWN - Arthur Woods rushed for 201 yards and five touchdowns on just seven carries to lead Reeltown to a convincing win over Tallassee in the annual “Battle of the Tallapoosa” at Webster-Nix-O’Neal Stadium on Thursday.

Woods had touchdown runs of 71, 33 and 6 yards in the first quarter alone as the Rebels built a 20-0 lead after one period.

He added another score in the second half on a 67-yard run to give Reeltown a commandingg 40-0 lead.

Tallassee’s touchdowns came on two Christian McCary runs in the fourth quarter.

Joseph Hooks had 73 yards on 15 carries for Tallassee. McCary had 59 yards on 17 carries.

Tallassee opens the home portion of its schedule next Friday against B.T. Washington of Tuskegee.

Beauregard 29, Selma 6

Z.J. Grady scored twice and Jayden Doolittle added a touchdown as the Hornets pulled away from an 8-6 lead with three unanswered touchdowns to defeat Selma 29-6 in the 18th Kickoff Classic at Cramton Bowl on Thursday night.

Doolittle rushed for 74 yards on 19 carries while Grady had 46 yards on seven carries and scored twice on two-point conversions. He scored the game’s first touchdown on a fourth-and-goal carry from the 1-yard line with 5:28 remaining in the first quarter and added the two-point conversion for an 8-0 lead.

Selma answered with its only score of the game, a 58-yard touchdown pass from Samarion Woods to Jarvarius Marks late in the first quarter.

Beauregard, which was 10-2 a year ago, got a touchdown reception by Doolittle on a screen pass and a 16-yard run by Grady for a 23-7 halftime lead.

Beauregard quarterback Trent Moulton was 2-of-3 passing for 71 yards, while Selma’s Woods completed 8-of-20 passes for 102 yards. Defensively, Brandon Dixon led Beauregard with six tackles. Selma’s Kendarious White recorded a game-high 11 tackles.

 

FLAG FOOTBALL

Prattville 40, Valley 0

PRATTVILLE -- The Lions followed up on their inaugural win on Wednesday with a thrashing of Valley on Thursday as Kaytie Chandler threw a pair of touchdown passes and ran for another in a 40-0 win at Stanley-Jensen Stadium.

Hartley McCay, who scored the game-winning touchdown in Wednesday’s overtime victory at Opelika, added a pair of touchdowns on Thursday. Lanieya Page had an interception return for a touchdown for the second consecutive game and Kaylee Robles added a touchdown as well. 

In addition to Page’s interception, the Lions also got picks from E.K. Gunn, McCay and Avery Patterson. Gabbie Hoyle had three sacks for the Lions. 

Prattville (2-0) remains home and will face Park Crossing in the 6-7A Area 5 opener on Tuesday at Stanley-Jensen Stadium.

 

VOLLEYBALL

Catholic 3, Orange Beach 2

The defending 4A state champions needed five sets to subdue a stubborn Orange Beach team, winning 15-6 in the final set of the season opener on Thursday in the Catholic gym.

The match marked the debut of new Catholic coach Jenn Denham.

Catholic (1-0) remains home to play St. James on Monday at 4:30 p.m.

St. James 2, Tallassee 0

St. James 2, Alabama Christian 0

The Trojans opened the season by winning a tri-match in the St. James gym on Thursday, defeating Tallassee 25-8 and 25-9 in the first match and Alabama Christian 25-11 and 25-11 in the second match.  

“I’m so proud of the team chemistry the girls exhibited tonight,” St. James coach Karen Lee said. “Sometimes nerves get in the way of that, especially on opening day, but the girls really played well together. Our serve receive put us in a great position to stay in system in both matches. The defense did a solid job helping us to get into offense as well.”

Kaylin Corley had 15 kills, five aces, four assists and nine digs and Ava Card had 11 kills, a pair of aces, two blocks, four assists and 13 digs. Sana Shuford had eight kills and four digs, Tat Shuford had seven aces, two kills, two blocks, 30 assists and nine digs, Alex Mendel had an ace, two kills and a pair of blocks, Sydney Johnston had two assists and 12 digs, Arden Green had a kill, Olive Maddox had two kills and Charleigh Kate Harper had two kills and a block.

The Trojans will be back in action on Monday at Catholic at 4:30 pm and on Tuesday at Prattville High at 6:30 p.m.

 

Hooper Academy 3, Abbeville Christian 0

HOPE HULL -- Hooper Academy swept Abbeville Christian on Thursday to remain undefeated. 

Libby Bressler had 28 assists for the Colts, while Kaylee Midkiff had 10 kills and a block, Victoria Hagemann had six kills, a block and three aces, Grace Seale had nine kills, four digs, four aces and an assist, Annie Bressler had five kills, four digs and four aces and KG Taylor had four aces, four digs and an assist.

The Colts (4-0) travel to Glenwood School for a AAA Region 1 matchup on Monday before returning home to play Southern Academy on Thursday.

 

Edgewood Acsdemy 3, Lee-Scott Academy 0 

ELMORE -- Edgewood survived a tightly contested first match with a sweep of Lee-Scott, defeating the Warriors 25-23, 25-12 and 25-19 in the Edgewood gym on Thursday.

Madison Martin had 11 kills, five aces and four blocks for the Wildcats, while Lindsey Brown had 10 kills, 15 assists and four aces and Avery White had seven kills, 12 assists and three aces.

Edgewood travels to Eufaula to play Lakeside School on Tuesday before returning home to play Lowndes on Thursday in a pair of AA Region 1 matches.
