THURSDAY PREPS: Patrician, Lee-Scott advance to AISA championship round; St. James girls top Geneva

Patrician Academy 42, Edgewood Academy 14

BUTLER -- The Saints’ big-play offense scored the first 28 points in the game and completely overwhelmed Edgewood Academy on the way to a 42-14 win over the Wildcats in the AA semifinals on Thursday night.

Patrician (12-0) will face the winner of Friday’s game between Chambers and Clarke Prep in next week’s AA championship game at Cramton Bowl on Thursday at 4 p.m.

Edgewood (6-6) weathered a 1-3 start to reach the AA semifinals for the fourth time in the last five years.

Tate Boykin ran for a pair of touchdowns and threw an 82-yard touchdown pass to Jay Lindsey for another score as Patrician built a 28-0 lead before Edgewood finally got on the scoreboard with two seconds left in the first half on a 32-yard pass from Austin Champion to Gabe LeMaster to cap a 15-second drive.

Boykin came back with another big play, a 55-yard scoring toss to Matthew Mize 23 seconds into the second half. Carson Coody, who had scored the game’s second touchdown on a 52-yard run, added a 5-yard scoring run early in the fourth quarter.

Edgewood scored its final touchdown on a 17-yard run by Chance McDaniel with 6:29 remaining in the game.

Coody rushed for 170 yards and a pair of touchdowns on 18 carries, Cecil Perry added 46 yards on nine carries and Boykin had 41 yards and two touchdowns on 10 carries as part of a 465-yard effort by the Saints.

Boykin completed 4 of 6 passes for 178 yards, with 123 of that going to Lindsey on three catches.

Champion completed 10 of 19 passes for 88 yards and a touchdown, with LeMaster getting 60 of those yards on five receptions and Bradley Boone adding 18 yards on three receptions.

Defensively for the Wildcats, Boone had 11 tackles, followed by Park Shaw with nine, Cooper Freeman with eight and Bryson Boone with six.

 

Lee-Scott Academy 41, Valiant Cross Academy 0

AUBURN -- George Meyers ran for three touchdowns as the Warriors cruised past Valiant Cross in a 41-0 victory in the AAA semifinals on Thursday night.

Lee-Scott (11-0) will face the winner of Friday’s game between Glenwood and Morgan Academy in next week’s AAA championship game at Cramton Bowl on Thursday at 7 p.m.

It was the sixth shutout of the season for Lee-Scott, which defeated Valiant Cross 42-7 on Oct. 14.

Valiant Cross ends the season at 4-7, the most successful season in the three-year history of the program. It comes a week after first-year coach Larry Ware’s team won the school’s first-ever playoff game with a victory at Monroe Academy.

Girls Basketball

St. James 54, Geneva 45

Ava Card had 26 points and pulled down nine rebounds to lead the Trojans to a 54-45 win over Geneva in the first game of the 18th annual St. James Tipoff Tournament in the St. James’ gym on Thursday night.

Natalie Barton added nine points and seven steals for St. James (1-0), which will play Pell City on Friday at 1 p.m.

Other games on Friday include Loachapoka vs. Geneva at 2:30 p.m., followed by Opelika vs. Prattville Christian at 4 p.m.

Catholic 58, American Christian 18

Allyse Rudolph had 15 points, six steals and four rebounds to lead the Knights to a season opening win against American Christian Academy in the LAMP Veterans’ Day Tournament on Thursday.

Heaven Bailey added 13 points, six steals and four assists, while Hannah Smith had 11 points and six steals for the Knights.

Catholic jumped out to a 27-4 first quarter lead and was up 44-7 at the half.  

American Christian was led by Hadley Bates with eight points.

Catholic (1-0) will resume play in the tournament on Saturday, facing Sidney Lanier at 11:15 a.m. and Wetumpka at 2:15 p.m.

 

Glenwood School 37, Hooper Academy 35

The Gators scored on a last-second shot to edge Hooper Academy 37-35 in the opening round of the Evangel Christian Tipoff Invitational at Evangel on Thursday.

Glenwood (1-0) played later on Thursday against Morgan while Hooper (0-1) will take a day off before resuming play in the tournament on Saturday at noon against Chambers Academy.

Victoria Hagemann led Hooper with 15 points, followed by Sydney Dicks with nine, Grace Seale with five, Ashbee Norman with four and Emma Griggs with two.
