THURSDAY PREPS: Trinity softball outlasts ACA; St. James girls soccer shuts out LAMP

SOFTBALL
Trinity 12, Alabama Christian 10

Madi Milton and Marley Sharpless both went 2 for 4 with a pair of RBIs and scored twice as Trinity secured its first win over Alabama Christian in 20 years with a 12-10 win over the Eagles in a Class 3A Area 5 game on Thursday at Trinity.

Trinity remains unbeaten in the Area 5 standings at 3-0, tied for first place with St. James.

Emma Rose Meldrum, Kate Knight, Emory Harris and Mae Mae Milton each added a hit in the win.

In the circle, Sharpless pitched six innings and allowed five earned runs while striking out one and walking one. In the seventh inning, Madi Milton gave up one hit and then struck out the final batter for the save.  

Trinity (7-8) and ACA will play again next Tuesday at ACA at 4 p.m.

 

Prattville Christian 9, Tallassee 0

TALLASSEE -- Peyton Thrash went 4 for 4 with a double and Chasiti Lindsey went 2 for 4 to lead the Panthers to a 9-0 win over Tallassee in a Class 4A Area 5 game on Thursday.

Laura Beth NeSmith pitched a complete game, allowing just two hits while striking out 12 in seven innings of work.

PCA (23-5) improved to 6-0 in 4A Area 5 play and will play host to Alabama Christian on Friday at 4 p.m.

 

Catholic 17, LAMP 2

Rylee Wilcoxson homered twice, driving in six runs, as the Knights defeated LAMP 17-2 on Thursday.

Catholic scored nine runs in the first inning, using a two-run single by Riley Hudson, an RBI double by Peyton Dees, a three-run home run by Wilcoxson and an RBI single by Hudson to jump on top of the Golden Tigers.

Wilcoxson added three more runs in the second inning with her second home run of the game. The Knights scored five more runs in the top of the third with the help of a two-run double by Anna Hill and an RBI single by Hudson.

Jennifer Looney held the Golden Tigers to one hit in the first inning before giving way to Gabby Eady, who allowed one hit in 1.2 innings.

Alexandra DuBois went 1 for 2 and drove in both of LAMP’s runs.

Catholic (8-14) improved to 3-3 in 4A Area 5 play and will return to action in a tournament at Lagoon Park this weekend, facing Benjamin Russell on Friday in the tournament opener.

 

St. James 18, Montgomery Academy 2

St. James scored 10 runs in the first inning and cruised to an 18-2 win over the Eagles in a three-inning game at Montgomery Academy on Thursday.

Tat Shuford went 3 for 4 with a home run and a double, scoring three times and driving in five runs to lead the Trojans. Emily Needham went 2 for 2 with a home run, scoring twice and driving in three runs and Mary Olive Maddox went 2 for 2, scored twice and drove in three runs.

Peyton Middleton went the distance, allowing just three hits and two runs, one earned, while walking three and striking out five.

E.G. Hines went 1 for 2 with a triple, scoring a run and driving in another to lead Montgomery Academy.

St. James (31-6) improved to 3-0 in Area 5 play and returns home to play host to Elmore County on Monday and Brew Tech on Tuesday.  

 

BASEBALL

Trinity 15, Catholic 3

The Wildcats used a nine-run fourth inning to defeat Catholic 15-3 on Thursday in a 4A Area 5 game at Whittle-Armstrong Field.

Patton Mitchell, Luke Hall and Brady Bennett drew bases-loaded walks, Land Sharpless, Blake Moses and Fleming Hall all had RBI singles, Mason Hawkins drove in two runs with a single and Xavier Boswell drove in another with a groundout to break open the game.

Hall’s sacrifice fly in the bottom of the first inning broke a scoreless tie. A fielder's choice by Hawkins, a double by Sharpless and a single by Bennett helped Trinity extend its lead in the third.

Mitchell picked up the win on the mound, allowing four hits and three runs in 4.1 innings while striking out six and walking two.

Ethan Levanda suffered the loss for the Knights, allowing nine hits and 10 runs in three innings.

Mitchell, Boswell, Moses, Hall and Sharpless each had two hits, while Hall, Bennett, Hawkins and Sharpless each had two RBIs.

Adrian White led Catholic with two RBIs.

The two teams resume the series on Friday with a doubleheader at Catholic.

Macon East 13-11, Chambers Academy 3-1

CECIL -- Macon East Academy swept Chambers 13-3 and 11-1 in an area doubleheader on Wednesday to clinch the Class AA Region 1 Area 1 championship.

The Knights dropped the first game to the Rebels 4-1 in LaFayette a day earlier, leaving Chambers in first place in the area at 7-0. followed by Macon East at 6-1. The Knights would have to sweep the Wednesday doubleheader to win the area.

In the first game, Bryant Morrison hit a grand slam in the second inning and added a two-run double in the fifth to lead the Knights to a 13-3 win over the Rebels.

In the second game, Parker Ruskin and Thad McKinney each drove in a pair of runs as the Knights continued their offensive barrage with an 11-1 win over Chambers.

The Knights took a quick 3-0 lead in the first game as Jackson Todd had an RBI groundout, Patrick Ernest added a sacrifice fly and McKinney followed with an RBI single. Macon East added five more runs in the second inning on Carter Hopson’s RBI single and Morrison’s grand slam.

Todd picked up the win on the mound, going the distance in the five-inning game. He allowed five hits and three runs while striking out four and walking none.

Micah Andrews, Hopson and Morrison each had two hits for the Knights. Eli Whorton went 1 for 3 with two RBIs and Colton Fuller went 2 for 2 to lead Chambers.

The Knights picked up where they left off in the second game as Morrison doubled in a run for a 2-0 lead, Ruskin singled in a pair of runs and McKinney drew a bases-loaded walk for a 5-0 lead.

Todd added an RBI single to center field in the second inning for a six-run lead and Sam Wallace and Andrews followed with RBI singles in the third.

McKinney went the distance in the five-inning game, allowing just one hit and one run while striking out five and walking three.

With the win, Macon East finished 8-1 in AA Region 1 Area 1 play, just ahead of Chambers at 7-2. The doubleheader sweep allows Macon East to draw a first-round bye in the upcoming state playoffs and will play host to a secomd-round game on April 22.

Chambers, meanwhile, will play host to the third-seeded team in AA Region 1 Area 2, likely Hooper, in the first round of the playoffs on April 15.

Macon East (21-9) faces Coosa Valley on Friday afternoon and Sparta on Saturday at noon.

 

GIRLS SOCCER

St. James 8, LAMP 0

KK Corley scored four goals to lead the Trojans to an 8-0 area win over LAMP on Thursday at the Emory Folmar Soccer Complex.

Molly Phillips added two goals, Natalie Barton scored a goal and Hedda Stoerdal recorded her first goal of her career.

Barton had four assists and her younger sister Elliette Barton had two assists, with Phillips and Ragan King each adding an assist.

Stella Williams recorded her fifth shutout of the season in nine games.

St. James (7-2) improved to 4-1 in area play and will return home for a pair of area games, playing Booker T. Washington on Friday at Carlisle Field at 5:30 p.m., followed by a Tuesday game with Tallassee.

 

Lee-Scott Academy 9, Prattville Christian 0

AUBURN -- Lee-Scott Academy shut out the Panthers 9-0 in a soccer game on Thursday.

PCA (4-7-1) dropped to 1-4 in area play and will host the Warriors on Tuesday.

 

BOYS SOCCER

Lee-Scott Academy 8, Prattville Christian 2

AUBURN -- Ethan Green scored a goal and assisted on another in the Panthers’ 8-2 loss at Lee-Scott Academy on Thursday.

Micah Newsom scored the Panthers’ other goal.  

PCA (3-11) dropped to 1-4 in area play and will host the Warriors on Tuesday.

 

BOYS TENNIS

Trinity 6, Pike Road 3

James Treadwell posted his 123rd career singles win and his 120th career doubles win on Thursday, passing his brother Samuel’s school record as the Wildcats defeated the Patriots 6-3 in a section match.

Treadwell defeated Jakob White 6-3, 6-2 at No. 1 singles for the 123rd victory in his career and teamed up with Jameson Sanders at No. 1 doubles to defeat White and Micah Cobb 8-6 for his 120th career doubles victory.

In singles, Sanders at No. 2, Charlie Frankin at No. 4 and Sawyer Speagle at No. 5 won for the Wildcats, while Pike Road’s Luke Wallace won a hard-fought match at No. 3 and Jack Salmans won at No. 6.

In doubles, Trinity’s Franklin and Grant Speagle won at No. 2, while Pike Road’s Salmans and Wallace won at No. 3.

The Wildcats (16-2) finish the regular season next week with matches against Dothan and Opelika.

 

BOYS GOLF

Montgomery Academy wins City Invitational

The Montgomery Academy golf team finished first in the Montgomery Country Club City Invitational with a team score of 300. Connor Evans was low medalist of the tournament with a 74.

St. James finished second at 319, followed by Pike Road at 326 and Alabama Christian at 340.

Montgomery Academy golfers finishing behind Evans included Barnes Trott and Jackson Williams, both finishing one stroke behind at 75, followed by Thomas Floyd (76), Joe Drumwright (77), Henry Robertson (83) and Doc McIntyre (83), Will Kitchens (84) and JC Bullard (86).
