Holland Williams had several collegiate offers to weigh before the Trinity senior signed on Wednesday with Mississippi College to continue her volleyball career.
“I had a lot of good D-I offers in New York and Arkansas,” Williams said, “but I’d rather be closer. I really liked the school when I toured. I loved the fit and thought it was for me.”
Her signing ceremony in the gym in front of family, friends and teammates capped a lengthy process in finding the right college that fit both her academic and athletic needs.
“It’s something I’ve been working toward for three years,” she said. “I trusted God’s process and here I am.”
Williams has been one of the top hitters in the city for the last three years, finishing her career with 922 kills and earning selection to the all-Capital City Conference volleyball team this past season. She met Mississippi College coach Bentley Odom during summer club volleyball workouts and elected to sign with the Choctaws after taking an official visit to the school.
“I was actually at NASA (North Alabama Spikers Association) camp,” Williams said. “She was there, coaching, and we met and she talked about getting me to her camp. So I went in the summer and got MVP at their camp and we kept talking and finished the recruiting process.
“The way she runs practices is what I’m used to. I just liked the way she ran practice and the way they do team bonding.”
Mississippi College, a private Division II college in Clinton, Miss., competes in the Gulf South Conference along with Auburn University Montgomery, West Alabama, Montevallo, University of Alabama Huntsville and seven other members.
