WEDNESDAY PREPS: MA tennis tops Catholic; MA, Trinity golf tie for MCC tourney

BOYS TENNIS

Montgomery Academy 7, Catholic 2

Montgomery Academy’s No. 1 doubles team of John Alford and Jackson Brown defeated Catholic’s No. 1 doubles team of Cooper Davis and Max Freeman to lead the Eagles to a 7-2 victory on Wednesday.

The Eagles’ doubles teams of Ron Sharma-Ford Morano and Anton Yang-Bo Johnston also won matches.

Singles winners for MA were Brown, Edwin Wu, Yang and Duncam McInnes.

Singles winners for Catholic were Cooper Davis and Cole Gillet.

Montgomery Academy (5-2) will play host to Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa at Lagoon Park Tennis Center on Thursday.

 

Trinity 9, Demopolis 0

The Wildcats swept the singles and doubles matches with Demopolis on Wednesday, rolling to a 9-0 win.

In singles, Trinity’s Samuel Treadwell defeated Ryan Reynolds at No. 1, James Treadwell beat Trey Pritchett at No. 2, Trevor Wilson beat Chandler Hutton at No. 3, Grant Speagle shut out Lawson Boone at No. 4, Charlie Franklin defeated Hamilton Pettis at No. 5 and Sawyer Speagle beat Peyton Hutton at No. 6.

The teams played a pair of extra matches in singles, with Trinity’s Hall Collett beating Brenden Stallworth and the Wildcats’ Ridge Newell defeating Peyton Hutton.

In doubles, Trinity’s Samuel Treadwell and James Treadwell defeated Reynolds-Boone at No. 1, Wilson and Grant Speagle defeated Pritchett-Hutton at No. 2 and Franklin and Sawyer Speagle teamed up to defeat Pettis-Stallworth at No. 3.

 

SOFTBALL

St. James 14, Montgomery Academy 2 (5)

The Trojans scored six runs in the first inning and six more in the second for a comfortable 14-2 win over Montgomery Academy in the 3A Area 6 opener at St. James on Wednesday.

Sydney Johnson went 2 for 2, scored twice and drove in a pair of runs, Emily Darby went 2 for 2 and drove in a pair of runs, Arden Green went 2 for 3 with a double, scored twice and drove in a pair of runs, Emily Needham went 1 for 1 with a double and drove in three runs and Tat Shuford went 1 for 1 with a home run, scored twice and drove in two runs to lead the Trojans.

Needham started for the Trojans, pitching one inning and striking out the side. Aleigha Davis pitched two innings and surrendered a pair of unearned runs while Peyton Middleton and Ava Stanford each pitched an inning of shutout ball.

Kaci Armistead led Montgomery Academy, going 1 for 3 and scoring a run. EG Hines and Emily Casey had the other two hits for the Eagles. Hines took the loss, allowing 12 hits and 13 run in three innings.

St. James (17-1) improved to 1-0 in Area 6 play and will face area rivals Alabama Christian on the road on Monday, followed by a road trip to Trinity on Tuesday.  

 

BOYS GOLF

Montgomery Academy, Trinity tie for MCC City Invitational title

Golf teams from Montgomery Academy, Trinity, St. James and Alabama Christian faced off in the NCC City Invitational, with Montgomery Academy and Trinity tying for first place with a score of 305.

Jackson McIntyre led the way for the Eagles with a 74, followed by William Hall (75), Connor Evans (76), Thomas Floyd (80) and Mac Freeman (81).

Playing as individuals, Montgomery Academy’s Joe Drumwright scored an 82, John Carson Bullard had an 88 and Jackson Williams scored an 89.

BASEBALL

Lee-Scott Academy 4-5, Macon East Academy 1-4

AUBURN -- Lane Eddins pitched the final 1.2 innings, holding the Knights to a run, to complete a series sweep of Macon East with a 5-4 victory on Tuesday.

Lee-Scott (15-6) defeated the Knights on Monday, then swept a doubleheader at home on Tuesday.

In the first game, J.D. Burns and Brayden Butler went 2 for 3 and Jake Cummings went 1 for 2 and drove in a pair of runs in a 4-1 victory. Cummings pitched the first 4.2 innings, allowing three hits and a run while walking four and striking out six. Harrison Short pitched the final 2.1 innings, allowing one hit while striking out three.

In the second game, Butler went 2 for 3, Garrett West went 1 for 3 with a pair of RBIs, Cummings went 1 for 2 and scored a run, Burns went 1 for 3 with a double and Ethan Hardee went 1 for 3 with a run scored and an RBI in a 5-4 victory.

Jack McKay pitched the first two innings, allowing just two hits and one run, none earned, while walking two and striking out four. Brandon Martin pitched 3.1 innings, allowing two runs on two hits while walking two and striking out seven. Eddins closed the door on the Knights, allowing one run on one hit while walking one and striking out three.

Lee-Scott returns to action on Thursday with a doubleheader against Bessemer Academy.

 

Lee-Scott Academy 11, Macon East Academy 1 (6)

CECIL -- Sam Jackson went 2 for 3 with a pair of doubles and five RBIs as the Warriors overwhelmed the Knights 11-1 in a game on Monday at Macon East.

Jake Cummings went 2 for 3 with an RBI, Brayden Butler went 2 for 2 with a double, scored three runs and drove in another, Lane Eddins went 1 for 4 with a double and an RBI and J.D. Burns had a pair of RBIs.

Garrett West pitched the first five innings, holding the Knights to three hits while walking two and striking out 10. Harrison Short pitched the sixth inning, walking one and allowing one hit while striking out three.

Barrett Spaeth went 1 for 3 with an RBI and scored a run to lead Macon East.
