PREP UPDATE: MA girls soccer stays unbeaten; AHSAA adds flag football

GIRLS SOCCER

Montgomery Academy 10, Alabama Christian 0

Montgomery Academy defeated area rival Alabama Christian 10-0 on Tuesday as the Eagles’ two seniors turned in memorable performances on Senior Night.

Leighton Robertson scored a pair of goals and assisted on two more, while Alex Budny had three assists of her own.

Sophia Cho scored two goals and added an assist and Kaitlin Phenix, Madison Yi, Hayes Jenkins, Haley Cox, Kerstin Daniel and Mary Elizabeth Cole each scored a goal to round off the scoring.

“I would like to thank our two seniors Alex Budny and Leighton Robertson for the six years they have both given to our program,” MA coach Joseph White said. “They were both fantastic tonight.” 

Montgomery Academy improved to 12-0-1 with the win. 

St. James 10, BTW Magnet 0

For the second time this week, St. James played BTW Magnet and the result was an identical 10-0 win at Carlisle Field on Tuesday night.

Katie Brightwell and McKenzie Turner each had a hat trick while Ava Card added two goals and one each for Mary Grace Hixon and Renee Greene. 

Brightwell also had three assists, while Turner, Dodge Prim, Sydney Brown and Card all had one. 

The Trojans’ twin center backs, Hope and Hannah McCain, helped maintain the shutout. 

The Trojans return to action on Friday at Alabama Christian Academy for another area match. 

Trinity 4, Houston Academy 0

The Wildcats shut out area opponent Houston Academy on Monday night as Mary Davis Bricken, Mary Alice Sasser, Katherine Warren and Lilly Schroll each scored a goal.

Ella Wiswall had a pair of assists and Hastings Avant added another.

Goal keeper Kaylee Peevy recorded the shut out. 

SOFTBALL

Prattville Christian 18, Trinity 2 (5)

Alivia Messick struck out eight and allowed just three hits as the Panthers remained unbeaten in area play at 3-0 with an 18-2 win at Trinity that was shortened by the mercy rule on Tuesday.

Chloe Hollon went 2 for 3 and drove in five runs to lead the PCA offense, while Sarah Williams and Chloe Hinely were both 3 for 4 with two RBIs. Riley Sweeney went 4 for 5 and drove in a run, Jersee Carter went 3 for 5 and Landyn McAnnally, Sally Swindall and Saniyah Weaver all went 2 for 4. 

PCA (17-6) plays host to Marbury on Thursday before closing out area play at Catholic next Tuesday.

Macon East Academy 8, Lowndes Academy 1

LOWNDESBORO -- Taylor McKinney went 4 for 4 and stole a pair of bases to lead the Knights to an 8-1 win over the Rebels on Monday.

Kylee Smith earned the win in the circle, allowing just one hit over four innings before handing the game over to McKinney and Kadence Ward in relief.

Devyn Debardelaben drove in a run in the first inning but the real damage came in the sixth as Breann Morrison and Smith drove in runs in a three-run sixth. In addition to McKinney, Anna Dickson Beck had multiple hits for the Knights. 

Harley Hooper took the loss for Lowndes Academy in a complete-game performance, allowing eight hits and eight runs while striking out six.

BASEBALL

Trinity 6, Stanhope Elmore 3

The Wildcats won their fourth consecutive game, defeating the Class 6A Mustangs on Monday.

Preston Berry got the win in 4.2 innings of work, striking out five and allowing just two hits. Coleman Stanley earned the save, throwing the final 2.1 innings.

Parker Hughes led the Trinity offense, going 3 for 4, while Grayson Ashe, Ben Easterling and Stanley all went 2 for 4 in the win. . 

Trinity (11-7-1) plays host to Catholic on Friday at 4 p.m. at Jason Armstrong Field before finishing up the area series with a doubleheader at Catholic on Saturday.

Catholic 5-10, Prattville Christian 4-3 

The Knights swept the area series from the Panthers to remain atop the area standings with Trinity heading into this weekend’s series with the Wildcats.

Catholic won the first game of the series 3-2, then played a doubleheader with the Panthers on Monday, winning 5-4 to improve to 2-0 in area play, then winning the tiebreaker 10-3, should the two teams finish the area race tied at the end of the season.

Catholic will travel to Trinity on Friday for a single game before playing host to the Wildcats in a doubleheader on Saturday.

Lowndes Academy 11, Macon East Academy 10

LOWNDESBORO -- The Rebels rallied past the Knights on Monday, scoring a pair of runs late to top Macon East 11-10.

Shelton Lee took the loss for Macon East, allowing two runs on three hits over the final three innings.

Colby Cox and Gunner Justice each had two hits to lead the Macon East offense, while Justice, Jabe Boroff and Kirkland Pugh each had two RBIs.

BOYS TENNIS

Montgomery Academy 7, Trinity 2

The Eagles swept the doubles competition on Tuesday at Lagoon Park to secure a 6A Section 2 win over Trinity.

In singles, Whit Davis, Guy Hughes, John Alford and Jackson Brown won for Montgomery Academy, while Thomas Treadwell and James Treadwell won their singles matches for the Wildcats.

In doubles, the MA teams of Hamilton Chapman-Davis, Hughes-Gaines Freeman and Alford-Brown all won. 

Montgomery Academy will travel to Columbus, Ga., to play Brookstone School on Wednesday, while Trinity will host Houston Academy on Thursday. 

Montgomery Academy 8, LAMP 1

The Eagles honored their seniors on Monday, then went out and took care of the Golden Tigers, winning 8-1 at McLemore Tennis Center.

Seniors Easton Stackler, Hamilton Chapman and Coleman McIntyre were recognized on Senior Day before the match.

Chapman won his No. 1 singles match over LAMP’s Edward Lee, then teamed up with Whit Davis to win the No. 1 doubles match over Lee and Juju Jeon.

Montgomery Academy swept the singles matches, with Davis defeating Jeon at No. 2 singles; No. 3 Guy Hughes defeating Ian Kim; No. 4 John Alford defeating Sunho Kim; No. 5 Gaines Freeman defeating Cole Gillet; and No. 6 Jackson Brown defeating Richard Chen.

In doubles, the No. 2 team of Hughes-Freeman beat Ian Kim-Sunho Kim, while the No. 3 LAMP doubles team of Andy Baek and Wonjun Lee picked up the Golden Tigers’ only point, beating Alford and Brown.

Montgomery Academy returns to action on Tuesday against Trinity at Lagoon Park.

GIRLS TENNIS

Montgomery Academy 9, Trinity 0

The Eagles honored seniors Ann Cobern Chapman, McRae Freeman and Julia Williams on Senior Day prior to their match with Trinity, then went out and defeated the Wildcats 9-0 on Tuesday. 

Trinity was the final 6A Section 2 match of the 2021 season and the Eagles defeated all four section opponents -- Eufaula, Valley, Opelika and Trinity -- without allowing a point. Montgomery Academy will be seeded first in next Wednesday’s section tournament.

In singles, No. 1 Gabby Barrera defeated Sydney Speagle; No. 2 Jenna Chandler defeated Hollister Dorey; No. 3 Mae Mae Voltz defeated Mary Elizabeth Hill; No. 4 McRae Freeman defeated Margaret Roby; No. 5 Ann Cobern Chapman defeated Stella Grayson; and No. 6 Kareena Singh defeated Kensley Williamson.

In doubles, the No. 1 team of Chandler-Voltz beat Speagle-Roby, the No. 2 team of Barrera-Freeman beat Dorey-Hill and the No. 3 team of Cate Peeples and MaryLee Kelso beat Grayson-Williamson. 

AHSAA ANNOUNCES ADDITION OF GIRLS FLAG FOOTBALL

In partnership with the Atlanta Falcons and NFL FLAG, the Alabama High School Athletic Association (AHSAA) announced Tuesday at its 13th Annual Principals’ and Athletic Directors’ Conference that girls flag football will be a sanctioned sport in 2021.  The new sport will be available for member schools beginning in the fall.

The AHSAA Central Board of Control approved sanctioning the sport at its January 2021 meeting, giving the AHSAA the nod to pursue the partnership. The season will culminate in December with a championship game at the 2021 Super 7 State High School Football Championships in Birmingham.     

“After discussions with the Atlanta Falcons for several months, we are excited to be adding this girls’ sport for our membership. We think it will grow rapidly,” said Associate Executive Director Alvin Briggs, who oversees the sport of football for the AHSAA. “The AHSAA appreciates the support, commitment and funding being provided by the Atlanta Falcons, the Arthur M. Blank Family Foundation and NFL FLAG.”

In addition to the Atlanta Falcons and the Blank Family Foundation monetary support, NIKE will provide girls flag apparel to assist the AHSAA with launching girls’ flag football throughout the state.

“We are thrilled to see girls’ flag football continue to expand outside of Georgia. The goal has always been to grow the game,” says Atlanta Falcons President and CEO Rich McKay. “The need and desire for more girls’ programming is there, and we are really excited the Alabama High School Athletic Association has agreed to add the sport and can now give young women more opportunities to play sports in high school. We look forward to seeing how far and wide we can expand the game of girls’ flag football together.”
