FRIDAY PREPS: North rolls past South All-Stars; MA hoops tops Trinity

FOOTBALL

North 45, South 24

MOBILE – The South all-stars rallied from a 24-0 deficit to tie the game, only to watch the North storm back with three touchdowns in a span of 40 seconds to win the 66th AHSAA North-South Football Classic at Hancock Whitney Stadium.

Pleasant Grove receiver Tremell Washington hauled in a 64-yard pass from Fort Payne quarterback Dax Varnadore, Hoover defensive back Jamar Moultrie picked off a South pass 18 seconds later and raced 54 yards for a score and a South fumble was recovered at the 1-yard line and Center Point’s Therman Moore scored his second touchdown of the night to close out the scoring 22 seconds later.

The North led 24-0 before Carver running back Tre Berry scored on runs of 1 and 3 yards to pull the South back into the contest. Berry finished with eight carries for 20 yards as well as two receptions for 12 yards.

Montgomery Academy’s DJ Vinson made it 24-21, pulling in a 16-yard pass from Jackson Kilgore. Vinson had two receptions for 21 yards in the game.

Defensively, Julian’s Keshun Marbury had three tackles and an interception and Catholic cornerback Rickie Williams had three tackles for the South. 

BOYS BASKETBALL

Montgomery Academy 64, Trinity 56

Montgomery Academy used a big second half, outscoring Trinity 42-28 to secure the victory at Trinity’s Captain Jack Court on Friday night.

Skyler Stovall had 23 points, four rebounds, three steals and a block to lead the Eagles, followed by Braden Gordon with 19 points, eight rebounds, three assists, three steals and two blocked shots. Brewer Welch added 10 points, three rebounds, three assists and a pair of steals. Cade Segars scored all nine of his points in the second half and also had three assists and five steals.

Montgomery Academy (9-1) will return to action at Trinity on Thursday in the opening round of the Jack Schweers Capital City Classic.

Prattville Christian 49, Autaugaville 27

MARBURY -- Carter Fiacco had 14 points and seven rebounds to lead the Panthers to their third win of the season in the consolation round of the Autauga County Basketball Tournament in the Marbury gym on Friday.

Cody Chapman added 10 points and four rebounds, followed by Wade Mora with eight points, five rebounds and four blocked shots.

Ethan Girlie added six points, five assists and took two charges to earn selection to the county tournament’s all-tournament team. Easton Miller added five points, 11 rebounds and took two charges. Miller now has taken 20 charges in 13 games and is on pace to set the all-time season record for most charges taken in school history. Justin Chapman had four points and five rebounds.

PCA (3-10) will play Prattville in the first round of the Jack Schweers Capital City Classic at Trinity on Thursday at 3 p.m.

Macon East Academy 61, Lakeside School 7

CECIL -- Jackson Todd scored 14 points, grabbed three rebounds and had four steals to lead the Knights to a 61-7 win over the Chiefs in the Macon East gym on Friday night.

Thad Mckinney added nine points and seven steals, while Micah Andrews had eight points and six rebounds.

Macon East travels to Elmore next Thursday to play Edgewood Academy.

Loachapoka 51, Alabama Christian 48

LOACHAPOKA – Jordan Tyner scored 16 points and Mitchell Chenier added 15 as the Indians fought to a five-point halftime lead and held off Alabama Christian down the stretch on Friday night.

Mac Moorer led Alabama Christian (7-3) with 12 points, followed by AC Walters with 11.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Catholic 64, Brew Tech 50

The Knights jumped out to a fast start and led 21-5 at the end of the first quarter on the way to a 14-point victory in the Brew Tech gym on Friday.

Hannah Smith led the Knights with 30 points, 10 rebounds, four steals and two assists.

Heaven Bailey added 22 points, five assists, six rebounds and 10 steals as the sophomore cracked the 1,000-point career plateau in the process. Ajah Tuggle added eight points and 14 rebounds.

Catholic (6-3) will travel to St. James for a game on Saturday.

Heleyna Penic had 18 points and Kennedi McGhee added 13 to lead Brew Tech.

Prattville Christian 77, Autaugaville 21

MARBURY – Jenna McClendon scored 30 points and pulled down seven rebounds to help the Panthers to a 77-21 win over Autaugaville in the consolation round of the Autauga County Basketball Tournament on Friday in the Marbury gym.

McClendon was named to the county tournament’s all-tournament team.

Kayden Carr added 17 points, 11 assists, seven rebounds and four steals, followed by Reagan Houston with 15 points, Kayleigh Arthur with four points and Laney Little with three points and four rebounds. Hannah Royal and Avery Mann each scored three points. Baylee Rogers added six rebounds and four assists. Chelsea Cutler had five steals and Christiana Franklin grabbed four rebounds.

PCA (9-4) will take a week off before resuming play on Thursday against Montgomery Academy in the opening round of the Jack Schweers Capital City Classic at Trinity at 4:30 p.m.

Alabama Christian 63, Loachapoka 20

LOACHAPOKA – Katelyn Sutton scored 12 of her 18 points in the first half as the Eagles won their ninth consecutive game in impressive fashion at Loachapoka on Friday.

Jaide Newkirk added 17 points, scoring 13 of those in the second half. ACA led 20-3 at the end of the first quarter and 35-11 at the half. The Indians were held scoreless in the fourth quarter.

Macon East Academy 58, Lakeside School 24

CECIL -- Miya Tatum scored 26 points, pulled down seven rebounds, dished out three assists and came up with seven steals to lead the Knights to a 58-24 win over the Chiefs in the Macon East gym on Friday night.

Jamya Powell added 19 points, 17 rebounds, six steals and a blocked shot, while Jadah Powell grabbed 13 rebounds.

Macon East travels to Elmore to play Edgewood Academy next Thursday.
