Little, Thompson earn POY honors from Montgomery QB Club

The Montgomery Quarterback Club has announced its year end award winners for the 2019 season.

Chase Little from Montgomery Catholic has been selected as the Private School Player of the Year. Taylor Thompson from Prattville High School has been selected as the Public School Player of the Year.

Coach Patrick Browning from Pike Road High School is the recipient of the Dr. Jim Maloy Coach of the Year Award.

All three will be honored at the Club’s Annual Awards Banquet on Tuesday, February 11. Derrick Ansley, Defensive Coordinator at the University of Tennessee, will be the featured speaker. 

Ansley is a native of Tallassee and was an All-Sunbelt Conference defensive back at Troy University where he started in 40 consecutive games. Before going to Tennessee, he served as an assistant coach at Huntingdon College, Alabama, Tennessee, Kentucky, and the Oakland Raiders.

Little, a senior offensive lineman, recently signed to play football at Troy University. Little helped guide the Knights to a 12-1 record and a region title his senior year while he graded out 91 percent with 103 pancake blocks (eight per game). He was selected as one of three finalists for the Alabama Sportswriters Association 4A Lineman of the Year. Little played in the Alabama-Mississippi All-Star Game and was a first team All-Capital City Conference selection. Little was coached by Aubrey Blackwell. 

Thompson, a senor tight end, recently signed to play football at UNC-Charlotte. He helped lead Prattville to a resurgence in his final two seasons with consecutive state playoff appearances including a 9-3 record and sate quarterfinal appearance in 2019.

As a junior, Thompson had 26 catches for 428 yards and as a senior he had 52 catches for 816 yards and 5 touchdowns. He also excelled as a key blocker in the Lions offense. He was selected as a Team Captain his senior year. Thompson was coached by Caleb Ross.

The Dr. Jim Maloy Coach of the Year Award is given each year to a river region coach “who demonstrates success on the field and an encouragement of sportsmanship, academics and a positive influence for the pursuit of excellence in all areas of their student athlete’s life.” Coach Patrick Browning is the 13th recipient of the award. Coach Browning just completed his 4th season at Pike Road. The Patriots have only lost six games since Browning started the program in 2015.  The 2019 squad finished 11-1 and won the region championship. 

The Club will also present the Dr. George Bradford Award to its hardest working member. The winner is not announced until the banquet and is selected by previous winners of the Award. 

The final meeting will be held at the Capital City Club in Montgomery. Social hour begins at 5:15 p.m. followed by dinner at 6:15 and the program at 6:45. Guests are welcome at the Banquet, but guests must make an advance reservation and pay $40 at the door.
