MONDAY PREPS: ACA baseball shuts out Beulah; Trinity softball handles LAMP

BASEBALL

Alabama Christian 7, Beulah 0

Landon Nelson and Cam Sutton combined on a one-hitter as the Eagles defeated Beulah 7-0 on Monday at the AUM Dixie Baseball Field.

Nelson picked up the win, allowing just one hit while striking out 13 batters over the first five innings. Sutton pitched the remaining two innings of no-hit ball, striking out one.

At the plate, Jackson McGuire went 3 for 3, Zander Costanza went 2 for 2, Nelson went 1 for 4 with a double and an RBI, Sutton went 1 for 4 and drove in a pair of runs, Teilan Long went 1 for 4 with a double and an RBI and Grant Cornette went 1 for 3 and drove in a run.

Alabama Christian (2-3) competes in the 31st annual FCA Jason Armstrong Memorial Tournament, weather permitting, with a game against Greenville on Tuesday at Riverwalk Stadium at 4 p.m., followed by a game against Pike Road on Thursday at Paterson Field at 4 p.m.

SOFTBALL

Trinity 9, LAMP 4

The Lady Wildcats broke open a close game in the top of the third with a seven-run inning, highlighted by a grand slam from seventh grader Harper Johnson.

In the circle, Madi Milton picked up the win, pitching six innings and allowing just three hits and one earned run while walking five and striking out seven. Marley Sharpless pitched a scoreless seventh inning, giving up one hit and striking out one Golden Tiger.

Trinity’s Kate Knight went 3 for 5 and scored twice to lead the Wildcats. Emma Rose Meldrum and Micaiah Shelton each added two hits, scoring multiple runs and RBIs. Sharpless, Emory Harris, Johnson, Mae Mae Milton and Evie Knight each added a hit.

Trinity’s junior varsity team will play at home on Thursday against Park Crossing at 3:30 p.m. The Wildcats (4-0) return to action on March 12 at home in the 3A Area 6 opener with Montgomery Academy.

Prattville Christian 13, Marbury 3 (6)

MARBURY -- Lara Beth Nesmith allowed just two earned runs while striking out seven to lead the Panthers to a 13-3 win over Marbury, with Alivia Messick throwing the final 1.1 innings to finish the game.

At the plate, Kandice Crosby had a three-run home run and added a sacrifice fly to finish with four RBIs, Payson Hanson was 2 for 3 with three RBIs, Paysley Bayer was 2 for 3 with 2 RBIs, Saniyah Weaver was 3 for 4 with an RBI and Payton Thrash was 2 for 4 with 2 RBIs.

PCA (3-3) returns home to host Catholic on Thursday at 6 p.m.

St. James 15-8, Reeltown 0-2

REELTOWN -- A quartet of Trojan pitchers held Reeltown to five hits in a doubleheader, defeating the Rebels 15-0 and 8-2 on Monday afternoon.

Emily Needham and Ava Stanford combined on a two-hitter in the opener, which was limited to five innings by the mercy rule. Needham pitched the first four innings, allowing one hit and one walk while striking out eight. Stanford pitched the fifth inning, allowing a hit and a walk while striking out three.

At the plate, Tat Shuford went 3 for 3 with a home run, scoring three runs and driving in three more, Sydney Johnston went 2 for 2 with a double, three walks, an RBI and a pair of runs scored and Mary Olive Maddox went 2 for 3 with three runs scored and two RBIs.

Emily Darby went 2 for 4 with two runs scored and an RBI, Needham went 2 for 4 with a double, two runs scored and a pair of RBIs, Arden Green went 1 for 2, scored twice and drove in a pair of runs and Lily Stanford went 1 for 3 with a pair of RBIs.

In the second game, Peyton Middleton allowed just one hit while striking out six in four innings of work as the Trojans broke open a tight game with four runs in the third of an 8-2 win. Aleigha Davis pitched the final three innings, allowing two runs on two hits while walking two and striking out five.

Shuford went 2 for 3 with four RBIs while scoring a run, Kaitlin Hudson went 2 for 4 and scored three times, Ava Stanford went 2 for 4 and scored a run, Johnston went 1 for 4, scored a run and drove in two more and Kaitlin Mitchell went 1 for 4 with a run scored and an RBI.

St. James (7-0) returns home to host Elmore County, weather permitting, on Tuesday at 5 p.m. and Brew Tech on Thursday at 5 p.m.  

BOYS TENNIS

LAMP 7, Catholic 2

LAMP won five of the six singles matches to defeat the Knights on Monday, improving to 6-0 in Class 4A-5A Section 3 play.

In singles, LAMP’s Ian Shin defeated Cooper Davis at No. 1, Sun Ho Kim beat Peter Walski at No. 3, Minsoo Park defeated Cole Gillet at No. 4, Richard Chen defeated David Huston at No. 5 and Wonjun Lee defeated Duncan Perry at No. 6.

Max Freeman won the lone singles match for Catholic at No. 2 singles, defeating Ian Kim.

In doubles, LAMP’s Shin and Sun Ho Kim defeated Davis-Freeman at No. 1 and Park-Chen defeated Huston-Perry at No. 3.

Catholic’s Walski and Gillet defeated LAMP’s Ian Kim and Lee at No. 2.

LAMP (13-2) won its sixth consecutive match with the victory over the Knights.

GIRLS TENNIS

LAMP 9, Catholic 0

The Golden Tigers won their fourth consecutive match, sweeping the Knights in singles and doubles on Monday.  

In singles, LAMP’s Reena Chen defeated Wilson Samuels at No. 1, Hannah Lee beat Sydney Hall at No. 2, Grace Liu shut out Darby Webb at No. 3, Dabeen Choi beat Eliana Conceicao at No. 4, McKenzie Kim defeated Alyn Mai at No. 5 and Jamie Lo defeated Sophia Lopez at No. 6.

In doubles, Lee-Liu beat Samuels-Hall at No. 1, Chen-Kim beat Webb-Conceicao at No. 2 and Choi and Hannah Baik beat Macayla Marbury and Grace Owens at No. 3.

LAMP (10-4) improved to 6-0 in Class 4A-5A Section 3 play.

TRACK AND FIELD

Montgomery Academy hosts first Monday Madness meet

Montgomery Academy hosted its first Monday Madness meet of 2024, featuring more than 500 athletes from 117 River Region schools.

The MA girls were led by throwers Isabella Johnson and Kenda Bonner, long distance runners Elle Ingram and Bea Farley, jumpers/vaulters Megan Link and Sarah Elizabeth Casey and hurdlers/sprinters Ava Thomas and Kaci Armistead, finishing in second place behind Opelika.

The MA boys were led by sprinter Eli Jernigan; vaulters Knox Wingate and Mac Benefield; and long distance trio Frank Williford, Matt Cone, and Price McLemore, finishing first.

Among the MA girls accumulating 10 or more points were Johnson, who finished first in shot put and first in discus; Ingram, who was second in both 1600-meter and 800-meter events; Bonner, who was second in discus and sixth in shot put; Farley, who was third in 1600-meter and fifth in 800-meter; and Link, who won the pole vault.

Among the MA boys accumulating 10 or more points were Jernigan, who was second in the 400-meter and third in the 200-meter; Williford, who was third in both the 1600-meter and 800-meter events; and Wingate, who won the pole vault.

Next up for Montgomery Academy is a trip up to Vestavia Hills on Saturday to compete in the King of the Mountain Invitational.
