TUESDAY PREPS: Catholic volleyball takes down Trinity; Pike Road tops Russell County

VOLLEYBALL

Catholic 3, Trinity 1

Catholic won the third and fourth sets to defeat Trinity 3-1 in the 4A Area 5 opener for both teams at PICE Arena on Tuesday. 

The two teams split the first two sets, with Catholic winning 25-14 and losing 20-25 before the Knights rallied to win 25-23 and 25-20 in their first meeting since the 4A state finals won by Catholic.

For Catholic, Harper Howell had 10 kills and five aces, Zaria Rudolph had nine kills, three aces and two blocks and Grave Levanda had eight kills and three blocks. Mally Barranco had two aces, 27 digs and a serve-receive average of 2.875 (of 3.0). Maria Schwarz had 40 assists.

Catholic and Trinity will meet again to decide the two-team area on Sept. 26 in the Trinity gym. 

Catholic (8-2 overall and 1-0 in area play) will travel to Brew Tech next Tuesday, while Trinity (2-2, 0-1) will play in the Mayor’s Cup at the Multiplex at Cramton Bowl on Friday and Saturday.

 

Pike Road 3, Russell County 0

PIKE ROAD -- The Patriots rolled to an easy area win over Russell County in the Pike Road gym on Tuesday night, winning 25-11, 25-6 and 25-9.

It was the 6A Area 4 opener for Pike Road, while Russell County dropped to 0-2 in area play.

Allie Lovrich had four aces, three kills and five digs in 2 sets, while Brely Dees had seven aces, a pair of assists and six digs. Taylor Robinson had an ace, 10 kills and three digs in three sets. Caroline Davis had eight aces, eight assists and two digs, Jada Gresham had six kills and two blocks and Rylie Fureigh had two aces and seven assists.

Pike Road (9-1) won its ninth consecutive game since dropping the season opener to Montgomery Academy.    

 

Prattville Christian 2, Prattville 0

LAMP 2, Prattville Christian 1

Prattville Christian snapped a three-game skid by sweeping a match from Prattville but lost to LAMP 2-1 in the second part of the tri-match in the Golden Tigers’ gym on Tuesday. 

PCA defeated Prattville 25-10 and 25-16, then won the first set from LAMP 25-15 before dropping the final two sets 14-25 and 12-15.

For the Panthers, Baylee Rogers had 24 assists, three kills, six digs and three aces, Emma Cate Carter had 11 kills, four aces, two blocks and seven digs and Leah Cate Wilson had 13 kills, a block and three aces. 

Paysley Bayer had a kill, a block and three digs, Dakotah Zimbelman had three kills, Brylee Byrd had five digs and four aces, Natalee Wheeler had a kill, eight digs and four aces, Baileigh Seale had a pair of kills, three assists, two digs and an ace, Aiden Williams had six digs, Kyra Sims had four kills and three digs and Maren Diefenderfer and Jenna McClendon each had a kill and a block.

PCA (6-4) returns home to play Elmore County on Thursday, then will compete in the Mayor’s Cup at the Multiplex at Cramton Bowl on Friday and Saturday.

Hooper Academy 3, Macon East Academy 1

CECIL -- Hooper Academy won the fourth set to clinch a 3-1 victory over the Knights on Tuesday in the Macon East gym.  

For the Colts, Grace Seale had nine kills, six digs and an ace, Libby Bressler had 23 assists, two aces, a pair of kills and six digs, Victoria Hagemann had seven kills, four aces, three blocks, a dig and an assist, Kaylee Midkiff had 10 kills, six blocks and two digs, Annie Bressler had nine kills, five digs and an assist, Henlee Garvin had two kills, a pair of aces, a block and six digs and KG Taylor had two kills, five aces, eight digs and an assist.

Hooper Academy returns home to face Lee-Scott Academy in an AAA Region 1 match on Thursday. 

 

Edgewood Academy 3, Autauga Academy 0

ELMORE -- The Wildcats remained undefeated after sweeping a best-of-five series from the Generals on Tuesday, winning 25-8, 25-10 and 25-3 in the Edgewood gym.

For the Wildcats, Avery White had six kills, Emerson Boddie had four kills, Haidynn Cotterill had eight aces, Harlie Barrett had seven assists and six aces, Lindsey Brown had eight kills, 12 assists and seven aces and Madison Martin had five kills and 11 aces.

Edgewood remains home for a pair of AA Region 1 matchups, facing Abbeville Christian on Thursday and Lakeside School on Monday.

 

FLAG FOOTBALL

Prattville 51, Sidney Lanier 0

PRATTVILLE -- Kaytie Chandler completed 14 of 21 passes for 237 yards and four touchdowns as the Lions completely overwhelmed Sidney Lanier 51-0 in a 6A-7A Area 5 game at Stanley-Jensen Stadium on Tuesday night. 

Many of Chandler’s passes were to Kaylee Robles, who had 94 yards and a touchdown, and Lanieya Page, who had 41 yards and three touchdowns. Page also returned one of her two interceptions for a touchdown.  

Hartley McCay rushed for a touchdown and Emma Moore returned an interception for a touchdown. Calavri Brown had a pair of sacks for the Lions, while Gabbie Hoyle recorded a safety with a sack.

Prattville (3-0, 1-0 in area play) returns to Stanley-Jensen Stadium on Wednesday for a home game with Smiths Station at 4 p.m.

Catholic 27, Carroll 0

OZARK -- Catholic scored twice on its first three possessions and shut out the Eagles in their first-ever flag football game 27-0 on Tuesday.

Anna Russo scored on the Knights’ first series and quarterback Jehle Dickson scored two possessions later on a 9-yard run and threw a one-point conversion pass to Rylee Wilcoxson to give Catholic a quick lead.

Jamie McGuire got in on the scoring from the defensive side of the ball when she sacked the Carroll quarterback for a safety. 

The Knights added another touchdown later in the game when Ann Cobb caught a short pass, then lateraled back to Dickson on a hook-and-ladder play that covered 63 yards.

Russo, McGuire and Haley Ishman all recorded sacks in the game. 

Catholic (1-0) returns home to play host to Russell County on Tuesday.
