WEEKEND PREPS: Tallassee wrestling wins 1A-4A title; PCA softball sweeps pair

HUNTSVILLE - The Tallassee Tigers wrestling team won its second title of the season with the Class 1A-4A boys’ championship at the Von Braun Center on Saturday.
Individual state champions included Thomas Patterson (106 pounds); Mason Nelson (113 pounds); Land Bell (150); Tra`mel McCoy (165 pounds); Nolan Addeo (215 pounds).
Bell, the Tigers’ record-setting senior, completed his perfect career (57-0 this season) with a pin of Oak Grove’s Ethan Hall (40-6) at the 2:39 mark to seal his final prep victory for Tallassee’s program.
The Tigers took the 1A-4A state title with 206 points. Weaver was second with 153.5, and Oak Grove finished third with 113.
Pruitt Conner of St. James finished second in the 190-pound category in Class 1A-4A.
Dylan Yarema of Pike Road won the 113-pound class in Class 6A while his teammate, Cody Kirk, won 190 pounds.
Dominic Sager of Stanhope Elmore won the 285-pound class in Class 6A.
SOFTBALL
Prattville Christian 8, Brewbaker Tech 1
PRATTVILLE -- Sara Payton Schmidt and Chloe Hollon each hit two-run homers to lead the Panthers to an easy win in the Prattville Invitational Tournament on Saturday.
Megan Masters added an RBI double in the three-run second inning as PCA jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead. Hollon went 2 for 3 and drove in three runs. Saniyah Weaver, Peyton Thrash and Addison Byrd each collected multiple hits.
PCA (5-0) will play host to Alabama Christian in a Thursday doubleheader.
Prattville Christian 4, Smiths Station 2
Saniyah Weaver went 3 for 3 to help the Panthers defeat Smiths Station 4-2 in a Saturday morning matchup in the Prattville Invitational Tournament.
Megan Masters tripled in a pair of runs in the first inning to put PCA on top 2-0. The Panthers added to their lead in the top of the third inning when Chasiti Lindsey singled down the left field line and Weaver hit a sacrifice fly, each scoring one run.
Smiths Station cut into the lead with a solo home run by Summer Crunk.
Laura Beth NeSmith picked up the win in the circle, allowing five hits and two runs, one earned, over 5.2 innings while striking out four and walking one. Alivia Messick picked up the save in relief.
PCA (4-0) returned to action later in the afternoon against Brew Tech.
BASEBALL
Lee-Scott Academy 9, Pike Road 2
AUBURN -- The Warriors broke open a close game with a six-run fourth inning as Sam Jackson and Maxwell Hammer both homered in a 9-2 win over the Patriots on Saturday.
Allen Owen went 3 for 4 with a double, scored twice and drove in a run to lead Lee-Scott. Jackson went 1 for 4, scored twice and drove in three runs, while Hammer went 1 for 3 with a run scored and two RBIs. Harrison Snow and Griffin Gaston also had hits for the Warriors.
Brayton Butler pitched a complete game, allowed eight hits and a pair of unearned runs while striking out two.
For Pike Road, Coleman Stabler went 2 for 4 and Herbert Reyes and Thomas Stripling both went 1 for 3, with Stripling scoring a run. Quinton Robinson, Gunner Gibbs, Jacob McDavid and William Ballard also had hits for the Patriots.
Hudson Franks, the first of three Pike Road pitchers, took the loss, allowing three hits and three runs, none earned, in three innings of work, walking one and striking out five.
St. James 4, Catholic 3
In a crazy game where all seven runs were scored without the benefit of a single hit, the Trojans won it on a botched squeeze play to open their season with a 4-3 victory over Catholic on Friday afternoon.
Catholic responded with three runs in the top of the sixth. After a strikeout, Joshua Jackson walked and Greg Rauch was hit by a pitch. Jackson scored on a groundball error hit by Ethan Levanda. Rauch scored on a fielders choice and Levanda scored on a sacrifice fly to center.
The Trojans won with three runs in the bottom of the seventh. Two walks and a hit batter loaded the bases. Jimmy Dickens drew a bases-loaded walk which tied the game at 3-3.
Luke Catchings was at the plate when a squeeze play was called.
Tucker Byrd retired all five batters he faced to get the win.
St. James plays at Wetumpka on Saturday before returning home on Monday at noon to play Thorsby.
