SEC announces 2024 football schedule with new members Texas, Oklahoma
By GRAHAM DUNN
It’s official. The Southeastern Conference has a schedule with dates… but not times.
The conference announced on Wednesday the football schedules for all 16 SEC schools for the 2024 season, the first schedule that includes new conference members University of Oklahoma and University of Texas.
Each SEC team will play eight conference football games plus at least one required opponent from the ACC, Big Ten, Big 12, Pac 12 or major independent, and each team will have two open dates.
The 2024 season will be the first year the SEC will play a schedule without divisional competition since 1991. The top two teams in the league standings based on winning percentage will play in the 33rd SEC Football Championship Game in Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta on Saturday, Dec. 7.
Alabama will open the season with three non-conference games followed by the SEC opener against Georgia on Sept. 28. ESPN announced over the weekend the game would be a night-time affair and presented on ABC at 6:30 p.m.
The Crimson Tide face their annual rivals on or near the traditional dates including Tennessee on the “Third Saturday in October” and LSU in early November. The Iron Bowl will be the weekend of Thanksgiving.
As with all teams, Alabama will have two open dates due to the lengthened schedule. Bama will have an open date before the Georgia and LSU games. The Tide goes to Oklahoma on Nov. 23, a week before the Auburn game.
Auburn will open the season with five-straight home games, four of which are non-conference. The SEC season opens on Sept. 21 with Arkansas followed by Oklahoma and a trip to Athens to face Georgia.
Auburn has open dates on Oct. 12 and Nov. 9.
Oklahoma and Texas face their first conference games Sept. 21 and Sept. 28, respectively. The Sooners open with Tennessee in Norman while Texas will play host to Mississippi State. The annual Red River Rivalry is slated for Oct. 12 in Dallas.
Other than Alabama/Georgia, times for the games have not been announced. The conference office also stated that games the first week of the season (Aug.31) and the week of Thanksgiving may be moved to a different date during that weekend. The game between LSU and Southern Cal in Las Vegas on Labor Day weekend has already been scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 1.
