Trinity finishes third at prestigious McGill-Toolen Invitational

MOBILE -- Trinity finished third in the prestigious McGill-Toolen Invitational on Friday and Saturday at the Mobile Tennis Center after winning three of four matches in the ‘B’ division of the 16-team tournament.

James Treadwell was named to the all-tournament team after going undefeated in singles and doubles for the tournament.

Trinity defeated Brother Martin of New Orleans 7-2 in the opening round, sweeping the doubles competition and winning four of the six singles matches.

In singles, Treadwell defeated Toni Rossi 6-3, 6-0 at No. 1 singles and teamed with Jameson Sanders to win No. 1 doubles.

Other singles winners include Sanders at No. 2, Charlie Franklin at No. 4 and Sawyer Speagle at No. 5. In addition to Treadwell-Sanders at No. 1, the Wildcats’ Grant Speagle and Franklin won at No. 2 doubles and Sawyer Speagle and Ridge Newell won at No. 3.

In the Wildcats’ second match, Trinity edged Stone County (Miss.) High 5-4, needing four wins at singles to win the match. Treadwell defeated Cree Cunningham 6-2, 6-1 at No. 1 singles and teamed with Sanders to defeat Cunningham and Lane Breland 8-1 at No. 1 doubles. Sanders, Franklin and Sawyer Speagle also won at singles for the Wildcats.  

In the third round, the Wildcats lost to McGill-Toolen 5-4, winning just two singles matches. Treadwell defeated Austin Jackson 8-5 and teamed with Sanders to defeat Jackson and Charlie Kidder 9-8 (7-3) at No. 1 doubles. The Wildcats also got points from Sawyer Speagle at No. 5 singles and from Grant Speagle and Franklin at No. 2 doubles.

In Trinity’s final match of the tournament, the Wildcats edged Huntsville High 5-4, getting three wins at singles and two in doubles.

Treadwell won at No. 1 singles with an 8-2 win over Dillan Clarke and teamed with Sanders to defeat Clarke and John Brinkley 8-3 at No. 1 doubles. Grant Speagle won at No. 3 singles and Sawyer Speagle won at No. 5 singles, while Grant Speagle and Franklin defeated Jason Cribbel and Brooks Schweitzer at No. 2 doubles.

 

GIRLS TENNIS

Montgomery Academy 9, Central-Phenix City 0

The Eagles won their fourth consecutive 7A Section 2 match by a 9-0 score, shutting out the Red Devils in singles and doubles competition at McLemore Tennis Center on Monday.

Sailor Vance stepped in at No. 4 singles in Lizzie Campbell’s absence and defeated Kisten McRoy 6-1, 6-2 to help the Eagles sweep the singles, then teamed with Mary Surhea White to win No. 2 doubles as well.

Gabby Barrera remained unbeaten at No. 1 singles, defeating Hadlee Pittman 6-0, 6-0. Also winning singles were Lola Campbell at No. 2, White at No. 3, Alyssa Kaplan at No. 5 and Lilliam Cameron at No. 6.

In doubles, Barrera-Campbell won at No. 1 and Kaplan-Cameron won at No. 3 in addition to the victory by Vance and White.

Montgomery Academy (8-3) improved to 4-1 in Section 2 competition and will travel to Hoover High on Wednesday.

 

GIRLS SOCCER

St. James 3, Northside Methodist 0

Ragan King led the way with the opening goal and the final assist to lead the Trojans to a 3-0 shutout of Northside Methodist in their home opener at Carlisle Field on Monday.

Natalie Barton and Gracie Russell each scored a goal with assists coming from Hedda Stoerdal and Sana Shuford.  

Goalkeeper Stella Williams recorded the shutout with several key saves late in the game as well as the tireless defending of Sana Shuford to chase down several late opportunities to preserve the win.

St. James (4-0) remains home to play Trinity in an area game on Thursday at 5:30 p.m.

 

Prattville Christian  10, Autauga Academy  0

PRATTVILLE -- Aiden Williams and Scarlett Mahlke each had four goals to lead the Panthers to a 10-0 shutout of the Generals at Panther Stadium on Monday night.

Elizabeth Rossi and Mimi Szeker each added a goal, while Addison Sutton had three assists and Morgan Lisle had one assist.  

Scarlett Mahlke and Eden Alexander combined in goal for the shutout victory.  

PCA (4-2) evened its area record and 1-1 and will remain home to face Alabama Christian on Tuesday.

 

BOYS SOCCER

Prattville Christian  5, Autauga Academy  0

Cody Chapman scored a pair of goals and Ethan Green added a goal and an assist as the Panthers defeated the Generals at Panther Stadium on Monday.

Lannom Bowman, Cooper Dunn and Cody Chapman each scored a goal for PCA, while Micah Newsom and Lian Van Heerden each had an assist.  

Landyn Guidry recorded the shutout victory in goal.  

PCA (3-4) won its first area game on Monday, improving to 1-0, and will remain home to play Alabama Christian on Tuesday.

 

TRACK AND FIELD
Montgomery Academy hosts final ‘Monday MAdness’ event

Montgomery Academy hosted its final varsity Monday night meet and also had Senior Night as the girls’ team finished third and the boys finished fourth.

Livia Dwyer won the 1600-meter run and was third in the 800-meter run, Elle McBride placed second in the 200-meter dash and fifth in the 100-meter dash and Elle Ingram won the 800-meter run to highlight the Eagle girls.

In addition, Isabella Arnett was second in the 400-meter run, Anna Belle Brown was second in high jump and Kaci Armistead was fourth in the 200-meter dash and seventh in the 100-meter dash.

Senior Skyler Stovall, competing in his first event of the season after playing for the basketball team, cleared 6 feet, 8 inches in his first meet of the season, a mark which leads all high jump performers this season in all classifications and is a school record, breaking the 6-6 mark he set in the state outdoor meet last spring.  

DJ Vinson, also competing in his first event after basketball, was third in the high jump.

Other performers include Trey White, who was fourth in the 800-meter run and sixth in the 1600-meter run; Price McLemore, who was fourth in the 1600meter run and eighth in the 800-meter run; Juan Kirkland, who  was fourth in discus; and John Bennett Lester, who was eighth in discus.
