WEEKEND PREPS: MA baseball tops Brew Tech; STJ softball competes in JAG Classic

BASEBALL
Montgomery Academy 11, Brew Tech 1
Reid McBride went 3 for 4 with an RBI at the plate and threw four innings of one-hit ball, striking out four, to lead the Eagles to an 11-1 win at Brew Tech on Saturday.
The game was shortened to five innings by the 10-run mercy rule. Andrew Hosein pitched the fifth inning for Montgomery Academy, allowing one run and one hit while striking out one.
Nathan Applegate, Vincent Desautels, Hosein and Chapman Baker all had a hit for the Eagles. John Allen Jones, Applegate, Desautels and Hosein each had two RBIs. William Marks and Paxton Haigler had an RBI each.
Montgomery Academy (8-1) will travel to Catholic on Monday at 2 p.m.
Alabama Christian 6, Beulah 1
BEULAH -- Cam Sutton pitched a complete game, holding Beulah to five hits and one earned run over seven innings while striking out six in Alabama Christian’s 6-1 victory on Saturday.
Jackson Burton went 2 for 4 with a double and a two-run home run, driving in three of the Eagles’ runs.
Jackson McGuire went 2 for 3, Mason Roosendal went 1 for 4 with an RBI, Levi Summers went 1 for 4 with an RBI and Teilan Long drew a pair of walks and had three stolen bases.
The game was originally scheduled as the first game of a doubleheader but Horseshoe Bend was forced to cancel the second game.
Alabama Christian (6-5) will play host to Catholic on Tuesday, then travel to Southside Middle School to play Tallassee on Thursday.
SOFTBALL
Spain Park 4, St. James 0
HOOVER -- Spain Park’s Reagan Roberts drove in a pair of runs and eighth grader Maxie Provost struck out seven and allowed just one hit to help the Jaguars defeat the Trojans 4-0 in the semifinals of the Jag Classic on Saturday.
Emily Darby had the Trojans’ lone hit.
Emily Needham took the loss, allowing three runs in the second inning and striking out seven in four innings of work. Peyton Middleton pitched the remaining inning, allowing one run on one hit.
St. James (17-2) finished in a third-place tie in the 23-team field and returns home to play Prattville Christian on Tuesday.
St. James 3, Pell City 2
HOOVER -- St. James rallied from a 2-0 deficit with a run in each of the final three innings to defeat Pell City 3-2 in the quarterfinals of the Jag Classic on Saturday.
Kaitlyn Hudson went 3 for 3 with a triple and an RBI, Ava Stanford went 1 for 4 with an RBI and Emily Darby added a solo home run to rally the Trojans.
Peyton Middleton pitched 3.1 innings, allowing four hits and a pair of runs. Emily Needham pitched the final 3.2 innings and earned the win, striking out seven and allowing no hits.
St. James (17-1) advanced to the semifinals of the tournament with the win.
St. James 2, Oak Mountain 0
HOOVER -- Ava Stanford and Sydney Johnston singled to lead off the top of the first and Tat Shuford followed with a two-run single for the game’s only runs in the Trojans’ 2-0 win over Oak Mountain in the opening round of bracket play in the Jag Classic on Saturday.
Peyton Middleton and Emily Needham combined to scatter five hits in the win. Middleton allowed four hits over three innings and Needham surrendered just one hit in the remaining three innings.
St. James (16-1) advanced to the quarterfinals against Pell City with the win.
St. James 1, Chelsea 0
HOOVER -- St. James wrapped up pool play on Saturday morning in the Jag Classic, winning a pitcher’s duel 1-0 against the Hornets.
Tat Shuford’s two-out single in the third scored Kaitlyn Hudson for the game’s only run.
Emily Needham went the distance, allowing just three hits in seven innings while striking out 14 and walking none.
Emma Parmley went the distance for the Hornets, allowing six hits and one run in six innings while striking out five and walking two.
St. James (15-1) advanced to bracket play with the win.
Thompson 8, St. James 0
HOOVER -- Aubree Hooks went 2 for 3 at the plate and drove in a run while holding the Trojans without a hit and striking out 12 in an 8-0 victory over St. James in the Jag Classic on Friday.
Kelsey Burden homered for Thompson, going 2 for 4 with three RBIs.
St. James (14-1) continued pool play against Chelsea.
St. James 8, Southside-Gadsden 3
HOOVER -- Ava Stanford and Emily Needham each drove in a pair of runs as the Trojans defeated Southside 8-3 in the first round of the Jag Classic on Friday.
Needham went 2 for 3 and drove in a pair of runs and Stanford went 1 for 3 with two RBIs. Kaitlyn Hudson went 1 for 3 with an RBI double Sydney Johnston drove in a run as well.
Peyton Middleton picked up the win in the circle, allowing eight hits and three earned runs in six innings.
St. James (14-0) continued pool play in the tournament against Thompson.
Prattville Christian 6, Auburn 5
PRATTVILLE -- The Panthers closed out play in their tournament with a 6-5 win over Auburn on Saturday.
Peyton Thrash went 2 for 3, including a three-run home run to put PCA in front. Sarah Payton Schmidt added an RBI single.
Alivia Messick picked up the win in the circle, striking out six.
Prattville Christian (16-3) will travel to Montgomery to play Alabama Christian, weather permitting.
Prattville Christian 6, Scottsboro 2
PRATTVILLE -- The Panthers got back on the winning track in the PCA Tournament on Saturday, defeating Scottsboro 6-2.
Saniyah Weaver went 3 for 4, including a two-run home run for the Panthers. Addie Byrd went 3 for 3 for PCA as well.
Laura Beth NeSmith picked up the win, striking out seven.
PCA (15-3) returned to action in the tournament against Class 7A Auburn.
Brew Tech 11, Prattville Christian 2
PRATTVILLE -- The Panthers lost their second game in the PCA Tournament, committing eight errors in an 11-2 loss to Brew Tech on Friday.
Laura Beth NeSmith took the loss in the circle as PCA managed just five hits.
PCA (14-3) returns to action in the tournament on Saturday against Scottsboro.
Scottsboro 2, Prattville Christian 1
PRATTVILLE -- The Panthers opened play in the PCA Tournament on Friday with a 2-1 loss to Scottsboro.
Alivia Messick took the loss for the Panthers despite striking out eight.
Peyton Thrash went 2 for 3 to lead the Panther offense.
PCA (14-2) returns to action in the tournament against Brew Tech.
TRACK AND FIELD
Montgomery Academy competes in King of the Mountain Invitational
VESTAVIA HILLS -- Montgomery Academy traveled up to Vestavia Hills on Saturday for the annual King of the Mountain Invitational. This meet has 40 of the top teams in the state participating and provides an opportunity for the Eagles to compete against much larger schools while working on personal records.
Montgomery Academy’s lone point scorer was Knox Wingate who placed sixth in pole vault at a height of 13-6.
Montgomery Academy will hold its third “Monday MAdness” meet on Monday and will honor its senior track athletes at the event.
BOYS SOCCER
Tallassee 7, Catholic 3
Juan Escalante scored a pair of goals but the Knights couldn’t keep pace with the Tallassee Tigers in losing their first 4A Area 3 contest of the year on Friday night.
Escalante’s first goal was assisted by Todd Bonnell, while his second was scored with an assist from Ben Chitlik. Chitlik also assisted on the Knights’ third goal scored by Stott Blancas.
Goalkeeper Garrett Sanford recorded 13 saves with seven goals against but one of the saves was a PK.
The Knights took 34 shots with 13 of those shots being on goal.
Catholic (5-5) dropped to 2-1 in area play and will travel to Wetumpka on Tuesday for a 7 p.m. match before returning to area play on Thursday at LAMP.
GIRLS SOCCER
St. James 10, Booker T. Washington 0
TUSKEGEE -- The Trojans posted their third shutout of the season by winning their Class 4A Area 3 opener at Booker T. Washington on Friday afternoon.
Natalie Barton and Gracie Russell each recorded two goals, along with goals by Sana Shuford, Lilla Conner, Molly Phillips, KK Corley, Elliette Barton and Ragan King.
Phillips accounted for two assists along with an assist by Russell, Mayson Barber, Elliette Barton, Shuford and King.
Goalkeeper Stella Williams recorded her third shutout as the Trojans have not allowed a goal in their first three games.
St. James (3-0) will play its home opener on Monday against Northside Methodist at 5:30 p.m.
BOYS TENNIS
Catholic 5, Jemison 4
With only four players competing, Catholic had to forfeit the No. 5 singles, No. 6 singles and No. 3 doubles matches, then win five of the remaining six matches to secure a Class 4A-5A Section 3 win over Jemison on Friday.
Singles winners for the Knights were Peter Walski at No. 1, David Huston at No. 2 and Duncan Perry at No. 3.
The Knights also won both doubles matches, with Walski-Huston winning at No. 1 and Perry-CJ Gaudio winning at No. 2.
The Knights travel to Sylacauga on Tuesday for another 4A-5A Section 3 match.
