TUESDAY PREPS: Catholic softball beats Trinity; PCA wallops Marbury

BASEBALL

Montgomery Academy 14, Catholic 11

Chapman Baker went 3 for 4 with a pair of bases-clearing doubles to drive in six runs and help the Eagles win a 14-11 slugfest with the Knights at Bowman Field on Tuesday.

John Allen Jones went 3 for 4 as well and drove in a run as part of a 14-hit attack. Vincent Desautels and Andrew Hosein each picked up a couple of hits each with Desautels having an RBI. William Marks, Paxton Haigler, Reid McBride and Nathan Applegate all picked up a hit for the Eagles with Marks and McBride each driving in a pair of runs. Oscar Fiore finished with an RBI.

On the mound, Reid McBride got the start and allowed six runs on five hits while striking out five in three innings of work. Hosein came in relief, pitching 2.2 inning while giving up three runs on three hits while striking out four. Baker closed the door for the Eagles, pitching the final 1.1 innings and allowing just one run on one hit. He struck out two.

Montgomery Academy (6-1) travels to Highland Home on Friday at 4:30 p.m.

 

SOFTBALL
Catholic 19, Trinity 9 (5)

Riley Hudson, Rylee Wilcoxson and Peyton Dees all went 3-for-4 as part of an 18-hit attack as the Knights jumped out to a 19-9 lead at Trinity on Tuesday.

Catholic took a 5-0 lead in the second inning, then scored seven runs in the third and seven more in the fourth to halt the game on the 10-run mercy rule.

Hudson scored three times and drove in four runs with an RBI single in the second, a two-run double in the third and an RBI double in the fourth. Dees also drove in four runs, while Wilcoxson drove in three and Kamryn Iverson hit a two-run home run in the fourth as every Catholic batter had at least one hit.

Jennifer Looney, Avery Sadler and Gabby Eady all went 2 for 3.

Looney picked up the win, allowing eight hits and nine runs, three earned, in five innings while striking out two and walking none.

Evie Knight went 2 for 3 to lead Trinity. Madi Milton, Marley Sharpless, Kate Knight and Mae Mae Milton each drove in a run for the Wildcats.

Catholic (4-8) will play host to Trinity on Thursday and to Glenwood on Monday.

Trinity (2-5) will travel to Catholic on Thursday and to Stanhope Elmore on Tuesday before returning home to play Prattville Christian on Thursday.

 

Prattville Christian 7, Marbury 3

PRATTVILLE -- Alivia Messick pitched a complete game, allowing just two hits while striking out 14 in a 7-3 win over the Class 5A Bulldogs on Tuesday at Prattville Christian. 

Saniyah Weaver went 3 for 4 to lead the Panther offense, while Peyton Thrash drove in a pair of runs.  

PCA (12-1) remains home to play host to Booker T. Washington in an area doubleheader on Thursday beginning at 4 p.m. 

 

GIRLS SOCCER

St. James 5, Stanhope Elmore 0

The Trojans waited to open the season on Tuesday and defeated the Class 6A Mustangs 5-0 at Carlisle Field.

Natalie Barton recorded three goals and an assist, along with goals from Elliette Barton and Sana Shuford. Assists were recorded by KK Corley, Mayson Barber, Elliette Barton and Lilla Conner to complete the night on a very windy Tuesday evening.  

Goalkeeper Stella Williams recorded her first shutout of her STJ career.  

“It was a great team win in the opening game, especially given the 20-plus mile per hour winds throughout the game,” St. James coach Charlie Brightwell said. “I thought the girls battled through the conditions, especially in the second half fighting the wind to preserve their first shutout of the season.”

The Trojans waited until the girls basketball team completed their run in the state tournament last Friday, with several of the players participating in both sports.

St. James (1-0) travels to Brew Tech on Thursday at 5:30 p.m.

 

BOYS SOCCER

Prattville Christian 0, Glenwood School 0 (susp.)

PRATTVILLE -- The game was suspended with 24:48 left to play in the second half due to inclement weather and lightning. The game will be completed on April 1 when PCA travels to Glenwood for their scheduled games that day.

 

Montgomery Academy 1, Dothan 0 (susp.)

Hampton Welch scored a first-half goal with an assist from Cade Segars, but the 7A Area 3 match between the Eagles and Dothan was suspended at halftime due to inclement weather and lightning.

Goalkeeper Grady Ming had nine saves in the game.

The game will be completed on March 13 when the Eagles travel to Dothan for their scheduled games that day.

Montgomery Academy will travel to Calera on Friday.
