WEEKEND PREPS: Trinity volleyball battles in Bay Tourney; Brew Tech wins two in Auburn tourney

Trinity goes 4-1 in Battle by the Bay Tournament

DAPHNE -- Trinity won its first four games in the annual Battle by the Bay Tournament before finally falling in three sets to 7A Hoover on Saturday.

The Wildcats defeated Grissom 25-21 and 25-13 on Friday, then beat Daphne (25-18, 22-25,15-10), St. Luke’s (25-10, 18-25, 15-11) and Oak Mountain (25-18, 29-27). The Wildcats then dropped the opening set to Hoover, 25-17, battled back to force a third set by winning 25-21, then fell in the third set 15-12.

For the week, Addison Cherry had 162 assists, 21 digs, eight blocks and 16 kills, Emma Moody had 54 kills, 24 blocks and four aces, Reese Patterson had 34 kills and eight blocks and Isabel Hill passed a 2.37 in serve receive on 148 attempts, 56 digs and 13 aces

Trinity (20-4) will be at home on Tuesday for a tri-match involving Prattville and Brew Tech.

 

Brew Tech goes 2-2 in Auburn Tournament

AUBURN -- Brew Tech won its first two games in a tournament at Auburn High over the weekend before losing the next two in finishing 2-2.

The Rams defeated Prattville 25-4 and 25-13, then beat Opelika 25-10 and 25-20 before losing to Tuscaloosa County 25-16 and 25-17 and Beauregard 25-20 and 25-19.

Jadyn McGhee had four kills and four blocks for the Rams, while Berkeley Wright had 17 kills and 12 aces and Kennedi Hill had 13 kills and three blocks.

Brew Tech (7-11) will be back in action on Tuesday with a tri-match involving Trinity and Prattville at Trinity. The Rams then face their first area match on Thursday in Troy against Charles Henderson.

Lakeside girls finish on top in first cross country meet of the season.

PHENIX CITY -- The Lakeside girls had three of the top 10 finishers to place first in the season opening Glenwood Finish on the 50 over the weekend.

Lakeside’s Chloe Helms finished first in the event with a time of 21:05. Addy Helms was fourth with a time of 26:11 and Eliza Erickson was 10th with a time of 29:45.

The boys’ team had a top 10 finisher as well as in Evan Sellers, who had a time of 21:39. Teammate Tucker Stevenson was 18th.

The Lakeside junior varsity boys finished fourth, with John Peak (15:29) finishing 11th in the two-mile run.

The Chiefs return to action on Saturday in the Deerfield–Windfield Invitational.

FOOTBALL

Monroe Academy 14, Valiant Cross 6

Caleb Cobb rushed for 128 yards on 10 carries to lead Valiant Cross in a hard-fought 14-6 loss to Monroe Academy on Friday night.

Jaquincy Scott added 54 yards on six carries and Devin Favors had 33 yards on five carries. 

Amarion Mays completed 6 of 14 passes for 74 yards and a touchdown, while rushing for 24 yards on six carries. Xavier Dunn had the bulk of the receiving yards, pulling in four receptions for 55 yards.

Defensively, Scott and Amari White had six tackles each to lead Valiant Cross. Devois’juan Gregory added five tackles and Quintavious Tyus had an interception.

Monroe Academy, 2-2 overall and 1-1 in AAA play, returns home to play host to Bessemer in a region game on Friday. Valiant Cross (0-2 and 0-2) travels to Prattville to play Autauga Academy in a region game.
